To Re-Build or Part-Out ?

I recently torched the motor on my 900 Mountain Cat 162" that I built a few years ago. The chassis is in descent shape with a hand built tunnel, bumper, mesh hood with UDX gauge, etc. What I think happened is a piston failure which took out that jug, bent the crank and took out the case ( aka total loss ). Now, there are alot of guys parting out their sleds on here and I could find a 900 carb motor complete and drop in there.... or I could sell off what Ive got and put that towards something newer. Any opinions?

Here is the sled:

Sorry to hear about the Old girl:face-icon-small-sad:rose: at some point you have to look at value to repair ratio as i just parted the toilet out:brokenheart:
and moved over to them m but not to my wishes.

I have a nice 990 top end with pistons and crank case:face-icon-small-hap

Man! What are you all doing to your sleds this year!

I sure hope we have better luck. I'm sure we could probably set you up with a crank if you decide to fix it.

I am in the same boat. Blew a rod bearing last week. Trying to decide if i should part it or fix it. I think I found a parts crank and the machine shop will do the work for $140 so I am leaning to fixing it this time.

what to do!!!!

Wow poor old 1m's!!! Same thing here! Con rod brg went out!! I was thinking about parting it out but w/o the motor not much left for value! So i spent 650 on a different bottom end and we were back together the next day! Sold my pieces for 200 so it cost me 450 plus some pistons, I decided to put in while I was there!!! No regrets yet but am putting it up for sale, and ungrading soon!

I parted out a 04 King a year or two and its a pain! Me and the guy at the UPS store were on a first name basis for a good month or two. I'd rebuild...

I would buy a 2000-2001 MC 600 for about $800. Move the motor and all mechanicals into your 1M chassis and give it to the wife, Gfriend, son, daughter, whatever. Part out the rest of the 600 for about what you paid for it. Then go buy what you want for a replacement. Everybody gets an upgrade for cheap.

If you have a good machine shop near by you can get a crank out of a 800 or 900 from 2000 to 2006. And have the machine shop build you one good crank out of two bad cranks. The 00 and 01 800 have a smaller clutch end so make sure the shop builds it with the BIG clutch end. I got a half bad crank from my sled shop for a song and the machine shop is charging me $140 to build and weld my new crank. Lots better then a new crank from cat at 550

Too bad. Do any of these sleds have over 2500 miles on them? Even ridden hard that's what they are supposed to be built for. I have ~ 1500 miles on each of my 2004's and now i'm getting concerned!

crank

Full retail for a new one from Country Cat in Minnesota is $1,131.34. If you know somebody I'm sure you can do better than that. Maybe the $550 is for a rebuilt one from Cat?

IdaC1 you better start stalking up on cranks!! As the miles build and fuel quality goes down, maybe it is ethanol breaking down the oil? Do these have oil lines injected into the crankcase? Or is it just premixed with the fuel in the carb boots? I wonder if the synthetic oil is not what it is cracked up to be? I have for one switched back to non synthetic!
On another note, There is a certain RPM range to avoid that will create certain harmonics that will lead to crank failure! This was quoted by an AC engineer yrs. ago. What that RPM is I have no idea? But spinning one of these engines 8000 plus for an indefinate amount of time can't be good in the long haul! One should ask this question to find out what RPM is not good? Could be an imbalance on the clutch that raises cane on the bearings? Are these bearings ceramic coated? Could it be wearing out sooner with the higher RPM and load? Just a thought!

I have had a few guys looking at buying the whole thing as is, and thats not a bad idea just to save on the shipping hasstle. I have seen a few motors around but nothing worth the money....

for now the girlfriends old M6 is going to be hauling me around for a little while!

$2,000 as it sits now and I'll throw in the stock hood and seat. Also any other parts I see laying around. Give me a call

Did you decide to part it out? I'm interested in the rails/suspension and track for my 04 1M. I'm in eastern washington. Give me a call 509-936-1307. Thanks, Justin.
