To demanding of my dealer?

I won a 09 Polaris EVT Mountain Jacket (Gray/Camo), never been worn and still has all the tags attached. The problem is it is a large and I wear an extra large. I went to my local Polaris dealer explained the situation, their response, “no receipt, no exchanges, no exceptions”. They said the exchange policy has been abused in the past and that was why the policy was so strict now. They said people have returned items after a year of use, claiming it doesn’t work. I can understand in that situation, but I don’t think I fall in that category. This is after I paid over $13,000 for my snow-checked dragon and accessories. I repeat it has never been worn and all the tags are still attached and it is still on the Polaris coat hanger.

I offered them to fully inspect it and verify it is in perfect condition and was able to be put right on the sales rack, but they wouldn’t even look at it. They did have those particular coats in stock. This is the only Polaris dealer in town, so anything I have bought relating to snowmobiles has been here; Klim gear, my other Polaris jacket, parts and accessories for my machines, repair work. Our quad was even purchased here.

I walked out of there not thinking much about it, but the more I think about it the more irritated I get. I understand and follow the “intent” of policies and believe that sometimes they can be bent.

I contacted Polaris via their website and explained the situation, here is their response.

I contacted the next nearest dealer, he said if he stocked those on the floor he wouldn’t have any problem doing the exchange. He only special orders the EVT jackets though. Acceptable answer and he also said if I bought my machine from him he would be willing to work something out. I certainly wouldn’t expect anything more than that.

Am I asking for too much? I don’t work at a dealership, so maybe there is something I’m not understanding. Right now I want to take my business to somebody else and never set foot in there again. If I am out of line, somebody enlighten me.

Not at all. Tell them because of their lack of ambition to make you happy, you will find another to work with. Nothing like poor business practices!!

Did you "win" it from the dealer? If you did, they ought to get you the correct size.

especially since you dropped 13k with them, and you bought a quad there in the past...use this as leverage

Odd how something won as a free prize result's in anger
I have seen this a few times
Not taking sides or anything, but it's weird how this happen's so often

Did you talk to the owner/manager or just a clerk on the floor? You would think that the owner or manager would be willing to deal with you after all you have bought there. Especially in these trying economic times. But then again, it was a freebie.:D Sell it and buy the size you need.

No offense taken

You are absolutely right, that is what is really eating me up inside. I got this $349.99 jacket free, I should be happy even though it is really useless to me. I thought about just giving it to charity and be done with it. I just think after years of supporting a business without returning or complaining about anything. I ask for something and be told no, without a legitimate explanation. I think what is really making me upset is I am asking something of my dealer that, I feel, isn't putting them at risk or at a loss.

I find it pretty surprising that your dealer won't work with you.

One other option is to find out what dealer it originally came from when whatever organizer/raffle/ect bought it. Normally they are more than willing to work with you on sizing for something like that.

Free coat

My local dealer here just gave away a Klim jacket at their Pre-season sale and they were more than willing to give the winner whatever size he wanted. The even said they would order it in if they didn't have what he wanted. I would definatly be telling the dealer that they will probably be handing business to the competition if there not willing to make something as small as a coat right for you. What do you think they will say when you want them to fix a 13,000 sled issue? If they are petty over a couple hundred bucks I would be nervous about REAL issues with REAL money. Good luck to you with the coat. Maybe you can sell it here in SnoWest and then buy the correct size at a DIFFERENT dealer.

I had the same situation between the local Caterpillar dealer and the John Deere dealer. The Cat dealer would get me parts nights, weekends, anytime. If I called the JD dealer friday afternoon he wouldn't even look it up in the book until monday morning. If he only knew how much money that attitude cost him in 25 years. I used to ask him for stuff, I knew he wouldn't have just so I could tell him to pound salt. Some people want the business and others just don't care. Don't even mess with those people. They always let you down when you really need them anyway.

Everyone is afraid that they'll be stuck with it in their inventory. First I'd check were the people you won it from got it. Usually they may be ok with exchange. Lot's of times for those raffles they will have it pre arranged with the donating dealer to exchange. But also If one of my loyal customers walked in and explained they won it on a raffle, I would insure they kept buying from me by taking care of them. (that is unless they are the ones that haggle you to death and you don't make any money on the sale and they hate you for it anyway.)

Go talk to the salesman you bought your sled from and see what he can do for you. I bet he would like you to refer him to other people and come back as a repeat customer. Don't be a jerk to him, but explain your side to him and ask him "is there anything you can do for me?"

WOW !! as a fellow polaris and klim dealer all i can say is they are certainly not sending the right messages to their customers. I would have had no problem at all exchanging it as long as i had the xl in stock and didn't have to order it in and pay freight. Large dealerships seem to want to live and die by company policies, proving that common sense is not so common. sorry for your negative experience....

Not free:rolleyes:! You had to spend 13,000 on a new sled right? I'd tell the guy to go F*&k himself and not spend another dime there! Your absolutely not asking to much from the dealer!!
