To all the great film producers: Why not make an avalanche movie?

Would you buy a sled flick if it focused on promoting Avy safety?

With all of the recent posts and reports of slides I have been giving a lot of thought lately to avalanches, Ive read a ton of info online, signed up for a avy course, and purchased the proper gear to be prepared for what I hope I never experience.
Anyway, the thought occurred to me that maybe one or many of the film makers that we all enjoy watching so much could raise the awareness level a notch or two by producing a film about avalanches. Something less grim than A Dozen More Turns and more focused on our sport. I am sure that there is a lot of existing footage and stories of slides and with their talent I am sure many people would purchase a copy of a quality produced snowmobile film/documentary/survivor stories type DVD that wasn't necesarily preachy but informative of back country safety procedures. I certainly would!
What do you say Dan, Jim, Jeff etc. are you up to the challenge?

I am not a film producer but...making moveis is about making money...and movies that are just about enlightening you to the perils that exist typically dont sell well...

Yes but it if was made to be entertaining first and informative 2nd, it seems to me like it would sell. How many teasers have you seen that have a shot of an impending disaster that suddenly cuts away leaving you wondering what happened? What if there was a film with tons of that type of footage, I would watch it over and over again. maybe I can revamp this thread into a poll of who would buy one.

I would buy one. It would be nice if they showed little of how much time they spend studying the mountain before they decide to do a big climb. I don't feel they are responsible to do this but they have the means and I think it would be pretty interesting.

I would also buy one. It also makes me wonder how many would just watch the video and not take the class.

I voted for #1 in the poll but was thinking #3. :D

Thanks for bringing this up. I think its a perfect idea to include a stronger message of avalanche awareness and education in snowmobile films. Last fall we did a Boondockers/Thunderstruck film premier combined with a presentation on avalanches and the specific dangers associated with snowmobiles and I think that was a great way to reach out to the sledding community.

I've already been talking with Craig Gordon of the Utah Avalanche Center about producing a snowmobile-specific feature on avalanches that I would include in my next video. If anyone has any good ideas for this, please let me know.

ps- If you're in the area, come join the Utah avalanche awareness ride Saturday, February 2. http://www.avarides.com

If we all know about and we know its made well I think it would sell better then any snowmobile movie!!!! A larger customer potenial to market...skiiers, snowboards, hikers, snowmobilers, training and the list is endless...instead of just snowmobilers!!!!!!!

I see a huge potenial if made right and marketed right.

just my silver dollar

I agree, a movie would be nice.

However, I would encourage everyone to attend an avy course. Get your snowmobile club to put one on. This way you can ask questions and get real hands on experience. I know that our club put one on, we brought in an avy expert to give a presentation on a Friday night, then on Saturday they went up onto the mountain and did demos on beacons, dug snow pits, and looked at hills that have potential risk.

Get your club to put one on.

I know locally, we have a lot of courses offered to the public for FREE. There is a Level 1 snowmobile specific course starting next week.

For an Avy flick, you bet I'd be interested. It's definitely needed. Something that is well made, will make money. Maybe not as much as what might be wanted in the short term, but these are rather scarce, and thus year after year there would still be sales. Heck, I'm still recommending an old vid from the 90's because of nothing else available.

I could see where these could be marketed at dealers everywhere. Avy centers would take note, clubs would be for recommending them, etc.

rmkboxer......do you have a link to that vid you are talking about?

excellent idea, knowledge is the key, I know a lot of backcountry skiers and I find their level of avy knowledge to be higher than sledders in general, that relates directly to the folks they hang with and the prep they do for backcountry adventures. They will cover 1/10 of the area we do in one trip and study it 10 times harder.

I didn't read through all the post so mayby this is redundant:
Add a 10 minute segment on the film toward avalanche awareness. I'm not saying that this is enough but it is a start and would broad'n awareness.

This is more likely to get purchased and a grandr scale then just a avalanhe awareness dvd. Remember, everyone thinks it's going to happen to the other guy.

Well, that other guy may be you someday!

These snowboarders appear to be getting their avy knowledge firsthand....

these movie makers for snowmobiles have footage like thunderstruck 2 that no body got killed. but still we need to see what can & will happen.
reality is reality &we must have more awareness.:beer;

p.s.
i would buy a avy vidio in a heart beat & show every year with all the people i ride with before the season even start.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat

I think its a great idea....maybe if there was more focus on educating a rider, we wouldn't have so many people out there in bad situation. I still havent' taken an avy class...and know I should, its not because I don't want to...just no time. I'd take any means I could get my hands on!

Utah Avy folks already produced a film and it will be a bonus in Sled Heads 4....

Thats cool. I was going to suggest getting the OEM's to fund the project and then sell it for Avalanche Awareness charity type funding. It would be a drop in the bucket for the OEM's as far as funding, and they would finally have some good news about themselves. All the producers could donate the footy we already have of slides and the finished product might save a few lives. Sounds like a win-win. You just got to find someone with the time and skills to do it and do it right.

3. My hard drive is completely full of p0rn, who has time to watch a movie about avalanches?

danieln, ddy58, HawkShot99, Hoody, icr, sidehill, Sled Idaho, tc_villain
