tipping guides

I will be going on a guided trip for the first time. I'm excited to try a new sled, and the area is new to me so a guide will hopefully be worth the $$.
So, my question is how much to tip for a half day ride? Thanks.

Some days I have tipped quite a bit by noon.
Best not tip down hill... that usually costs a lot
hehehe

I tend to look at Guides as a whole in the same book, Fishing and Snowmobiling. I know I generally tip a fishing capt, seems steep but its for a group of maybe 3-5, 100-150 bucks. This is if he got me on the fish and made sure I/we were fishing how we wanted. Did he just sit there or make sure we were having fun, getting all out of the trip.
I tend to look at snowmobile guides the same way, did he/they put me on the conditions I wanted, was capable of. Maybe push me/test me a bit, to make me better. Did they just lead the group through the terrain or did they help us be better riders, give us ideas for lines and pointers, once they got us to a spot to play.
100 maybe steep for a snow guide(for a small group), as he has a bit less overhead than a fishing guide, but look at size of group and how he/they may have helped you.
Also how do you want them to remember you, Is this someone you want to guide you again, Not to say you want them to remember for just your money, but being fair, as next time you may want them to guide you, they will rember you were fair at the end of the day. Therefore even more helpfull.
Just my 2 cents, well 1 cent now with economy.

Thanks Nole, I wish I didn't even need to ask the question. I would like to share the wealth if I had it. I was thinking if the guy does a good job it would be worth 100 bones for our group of three.

yup a 100 bucks is lots if he did the job!if he didn't like you wanted then pay the bill and be done with him it is a tip(to improve service)!

Sorry did not mean to say/imply you have to give a 100 bones. Whole day look at that at as the top end, then use a scale about how they did for half. I know money is tight every where, so only stated as a scale to help look at/use to think about.

I am a charter captain, and i know that usually tips follow the way people tip in restaurants. If you get really good service and the meal was great you tip 18 or 20%. If its not so good, then you tip less, maybe 10 oe 15%. I also know that if he does a poor job, stiffing him only sends a bad message, whereas talking to the owner and suggesting improvements will get you way further. Have fun!
