time for a new helmet

just ordered a pair of sinister goggles with a couple of different lenses since that snowest coupon was still available. now i need to find a lid, any opinions. I've been out of sledding for a few years but i use to wear a cheap hjc mx and didn't have any complaints, just wondering if spending the extra dough on something else will be worth my while. I was looking at the klim f4 and troy lee designs. what do you guys think?

Both are very nice helmets. Your new goggles will fit the Troylee helmet better though. They will fit the Klim helmet, but I'm told the small design of the goggle doesn't seal the face well.
With more expensive helmets you are typically paying for better shell composition. They are usually a better fit with nicer interiors. Some have improved venting as well. Troylee you will pay some for the paint job, but it is still a very good helmet.

I wear the same goggles with my TLD helmet and love the way they fit! My TLD is the best helmet I've owned, and I have a pretty big stash!

I have a season on my ToBe now. NO problems with wearing it. Very comfortable.

Check out the Fox V3 helmets 2.9lbs and are way nice. Girlfriend just picked up a flippen limited edition pink one.

She baught it just because it was pink!

It is a sweet helmet and I will be getting the blue one next month.

She had to pay the $375 for the 08 she baught, but if you are fine with the 07 which are the same just different graphics this site has them on closeout for $175!

I wear VEGA. Its the most comfortable lid for me. No problems at all. id recommend it, too! check 'em out. :)

When choosing helmets always realize that you are paying for head protection. If you can spend $300 on a jacket why not spend $500 on a good helmet.....why spend more on a jacket than helmet.....it's your head that you are protecting. Just food for thoughts here.......

I alway love it when I see someone struting around in expensive Klim and name brand leather jackets and pull some cheap plastic shell off there head.

I've got the TroyLee helmet, pretty pricey but its worth every dime compared to my old Fox helmet!!:beer;

Depends on where/how you ride to some extent. I know some guys that don't even wear a helmet on big powder days. Low speeds, deep snow, wide open spaces.... I personally wear mine but out west I never get the sled over about 40 mph anyway, maybe downhill in the spring, but it is very different than the midwest where high speeds and tight trails are the norm.

Love my ToBe helmet but you need to order a size larger than normal. The 509 goggles fit them perfectly too but the strap leaves a red mark on the back thats impossible to remove. Also the piping on the bottom of my ToBe helmet came off within the first couple rides but some superglue solved that.

IMO, guys that dont wear helmets are showing how much their brains are worth. Tell ya what, have them go outside, and run as fast as they can and run head first into a tree. And thats nowhere near as fast as riding.

Rant Over.

As for what helmet to buy...go try on as many as possible for fit. Fit is the number one issue for a helmet doing its job. Once you find the one that fits, check to see if that brand sells a higher end line. Shop around online. You'll be surprised the deals out there, especially clearance sites with last years model.

There was a very interesting article about helmets in Motorcyclist magazine a couple of years ago. They found that some of the cheaper helmets with only the DOT rating transfered less energy to your head in a crash than some of the higher priced Snell certified helmets. A more expensive helmet does not always mean a better helmet! I think that if you like the look and the fit is proper then most helmets will do the job.

Hey uker7! If you need any info on the new TOBE lids let me know! you can always PM me or email me tobe@alticity.com.

Our new helmet for this coming fall uses the same shell as the Troy Lee Helmet but is lighter (UNDER 3LBS WITH SPEAKERS!), DOT and ECE race approved, comes with Skullcandy speakers AND can be used without speakers, and is only $375. The helmet is worth $375 even without the speakers, but unlike the oil companies, we don't see the point in screwing over the public so we are keeping the price down. :face-icon-small-win

here is a link to the NEW TOBE HELMET

Thanks and fire away with questions! BTW the Do Thrill TOBE helmet was fitted small but the new Do Rock fits normal.

do rock does look like a nice helmet but I compared it to the TLD and it seems to be the same shell as the SE which is only $365. not trying to bash your lids are anything, they look great and I love the idea of the speakers (whether I'd use them or not is another story). am I right or is it a different helmet?

The 509 goggles don't work with the Klim F4. I tried everything I could think of at the beginning of this season to get them to work, new balaclava, face masks, etc.... and the bottom line is the 509's are just physically too small of goggle. They let a lot of air in to your face when using this helmet. This isn't a knock against the goggles at all, the chrome lens they came with was the best visibility I've ever had ... it's just simply that they didn't work with my F4 at all. Froze me senseless a few times :(

If you want to go with the Klim F4 helmet, go with the Scott 89xi's ... they are a perfect fit for that helmet.
