Snowbike Kit Comparisons
I have been riding mountain horses now entering my 3rd year. I have had several bikes from big bore ktm (570) to 450 race bikes. I currently have a 690 ktm with a 121 track that performs absolutely amazing in the prairies. It opens everyone's eyes as it flies by a 800cc sled. Recently performed a speed run with gps hitting 143kmph.
I also recently for this year put a 137 inch MH kit on my 2012 yamaha 450f. I was in Revelstoke B.C recently on Nov 24,25,26 of 2012 where I was able to put my long track kit to the test on a stock 450. I was impressed. I found the 450 pulling the same gears as my sons (14 years old and 96lbs) kawasaki with the sx kit on it in steep sidehill climbs. The bike ,I find is very stable and amazing to ride. The snow conditions were very good. I always had it stuck in my head that a 450 may not have the power like my 570 ktm did--- I was mistaken. The close gear range and torque of a 450 --I highly recommend it to the back country deep snow enthusiasts. Yes it is longer so therefore you lose some performance on the trail but for me I will sacrifice that as I know the trail is a short ride before adventuring off it.
Come spring time and snow conditions are set up, I will defenitely go on to riding my kawasaki with the sx kit. For all you guys that havent tried that kit I highly recommend it. It handles amazing the trail is not a fight--- sit relax and pin it. It really shows a lot of hard hours went into building a amazing product.
On my second day of riding this year in Revelstoke BC, I finally convinced the crew that I was with, to try my timbersled snowbike. They are die hard sledders and it was a challenge to even get them to try it. My friends had neverever rode a bike let alone shifted a gear on a bike. Three out of four caught on instantly and had huge smiles saying it was amazing. The fourth just needs some seat time and less technical area. Their reactions and phrases, once back were:" effortless fun, aim and go, sidehilling effortless, so nimble, absolutely amazing for such little horse power, I could see myself owning one very soon and changing up my rides on a trip. "
Another new build this year is put a sx kit on my sons 2012 yamaha 250f . He has been recently riding a polaris pro but his weight along with his riding experience was not allowing him to keep up with the crew. That has changed now. Wherever we stopped he was right next to us. The smaller 4 stroke bikes really impress me! I rode the 250 and found the bike very nimble. I am 240lbs with gear and 6ft 5inches so in mnts with me it lacked in some areas obviously. But for a 150lbs rider that races 250 all summer put a sx kit or st kit on it and ride year round. Seeing we live in the prairies we have been able to do several comparisons with the 450 and 250 both havin sx kits on them. My weight and size to my son's weight and size comparisons are very close. Yes-- the 450 has a higher speed but the rest of areas of performance is very close.
What a great sport! So glad to see it growing. Way to go Timbersled.
