Thumb throttle alternatives?

I just bought a sled and went on my first ride today. Coming from dirtbikes the first thing I noticed is how awkward using my thumb for the throttle was. How do you keep yourself from going over the bars if your thumb is on the throttle and not on the bar? Is my throttle in the wrong position? Am I doing it wrong? My first thought was to flip it around and use my index finger to pull it like the front brake on a dirtbike. It was annoying me so much I used my pinky finger to wedge under the bar to allow me to hold myself up when I'm putting pressure down.

how is your thumb throttle set up? i like mine about level with the ground. if that make sense. and you hold on with your fingers? you shouldnt really need a death grip on the thing.

I grip it loosely like I would a dirtbike. My throttle is setup like the one in this photo:

quite a few people on this forum make a finger throttle out of it by twisting it ...do a search or pm backcountryislife on this site as he rides with a finger throttle...and a few do a twist throttle as well..just dang well have a tether..!!!!!!

magic, try to find that video of the guy without the tether!! tether is a must I think.

that's how it is supposed to be.its not a dirt bike.i would love to see someone ride trees with a twisty.

WHAT?? why would it be any different than riding my dirt bike in the trees??? have you ever seen freestyle motoX :face-icon-small-dis:face-icon-small-dis:face-icon-small-dis

I could easily ride a snow mobile with a twist grip:argue:

to much using the bars to shift weight and counter steer.i can only picture a disaster.i like to push down on my throttle side of the bars when leaning right.would be hard to control without the thumb throttle.just my style.

I guess you have never ridden a dirt bike?? Do you think you just sit on a bike and it goes where you want?? think about it

Yeah, but you do a whole lot more weight shifting with a snowmobile than a dirt bike. Just imagine trying to do a downhill turn/start with a twisty throttle.

Amen. However, the twist throttle on a bike is really there because you have a clutch and brake level to work with your hands, no space for anything else except a twist throttle.

I just think thumb throttles are silly because you can't keep a loose full grip on the bar (unless I'm doing something wrong). With my thumb on the throttle I have a partial grip on the bar. How do the guys that jump/race snowmobiles setup their throttles?

I have a lot more control with a twist grip, no matter where my hand is I can turn the throttle, think about it:face-icon-small-dis think about what a dirt bike rider is doing with his hands........Throttle and Front brake in right hand, Clutch in left, his feet must operate the shifter and rear brake.........all while bouncing off rocks and tree roots and you have to operate what while sitting on a sofa seat LOL

do I have a twist throttle on my snowmobile? No but I could certainly ride it with one:typing:

I ride front finger throttle it's a million times better than a thumb throttle. Switch it for a full day and then put it back you'll find you turn it right back to the front
