Thoughts on opening a rental place?

I know a few people that own and run rental businesses. Personally it is not for me.

Be preapred to go find sleds. People will call you, be lost, and have no clue where they are at. You need to know your area really well for this, cause you will get things like "I am next to the tree", "I can see a fence", etc. I have personally been involved with a couple of these "rescue missions".

Then there is the sled that goes missing with no call in from the customer. Just saw this happen over New Years. Customer rented for three days, said he would stop in every morn for oil, never showed up after he left, for three days. Was 6 PM of day three that the rental owner was starting to rally people for a little S&R of their sled.

I do thinka rental business is a viable thing, and a great way to get people into the sport. I personally take a group out west every year, that usually involves somebody (or a few people) that are "new" to the mountain riding segment, and we get these people to rent.

Overall, if you have the traffic in your and people, I think you can make it work. Just make sure you do your homework before hand (Insurance, Spare Parts, legal docs, extra help, etc.).

Good luck if you maove forward.
