This could suck [snowbird expansion]

I was a skier longer than I've been a sledder but I hate the way they've been working both sides of the fence to shut down land for others just to benefit themselves. Seems to always be a Win Win for them.

This is a very upsetting matter.

Powder mountain and now Snowbasin are expanding to built homes. Like Ron said, for their benefit. We are loosing riding area, but yet they don't have to regester their skies :face-icon-small-fro

That is news to me since I work at Snowbasin. I also live in the valley and PM just got shut down to expand/make it a town.

Most of Snowbasin's land is privately owned and the plans have been around since 1999 when they got the Olympics.
Snowbird do not know?
I would wait it out, I think the $$ factor will play a big role in all of this development and the impact studies they do take awhile.

as stated, snowbasin(earl holding) owns the land.

also, i'm sure all of you would have a real BLAST snowmobiling on the proposed areas. does unloading on trappers loop look appealing to you?

I know there are people who have rode that area and i belive OVS peeps have access to that area and still ride there. but don't quote me on that. What matters is that our kids will not have ANY land to ride wether is there or anywhere. I belive old man "Wink" rides there as he lives in the Mountain Green area. Its not where you unload as to have access from there to ride. From Development comes more closures to more land.

if the land is private you shouldn't be there anyway?

the only land that looks fun to ride is to the south of snowbasin. i see tracks around there from time to time, but you'd have to know where to unload to get there. elevation is still pretty low right there. probably not worth it.

simply pointing out that the proposed plan at snowbasin doesn't really affect sledders. and it probably won't happen for years

Its about the future, not now..

Sure it doesn't matter now, but it did at one point. And when you decide to have kids and they get ready to ride and by then who knows what closures we'll be talking about, then it will matter. Petersons is private too, but if you know where and who, you can ride the area. Plata is private, and we ride the chit out of it. Its about the future. Your 22, it should matter more to you. But I guess the youth got the answers.

the Uintas have allot of private land as well but allot of the ranchers dont care if you ride there in the winter just dont get caught there in the summer. 5 Snowmobiles do less damage to the earth then 1 person the info is in the STATES SNOWMOBILE OHV HAND BOOK. It is even one of the test ?'s i believe.

Guess what about 10 years ago this was a riding area. They did a land trade with the forest service and Snowbasin closed it down to sledders. When I was younger this area was very popular to sledders. There was a hill up there called the tunnel that people still talk about. Also guess what the Peterson side is owned by Earl Holding of Snow Basin along with some other developers. It is only a matter of time before they propose doing something with that. And also if you get caught by the right people above Peterson/Milton you will get a trespassing ticket. It sucks as this was some of the best riding around. If you ride above Morgan you are asking for trouble anymore.

I hadn't heard about the snowbasin expansion but Mary Ellen Gulch reallu upsets me.

A very hard ride to the top last time I did it in the '70's but ranks up there with my best rides ever... Mineral Basin next door was a constant playground back then...

Got to stop the expansion on the ski resorts or soon they'll expand over the top and drop lifts into snake creek and we'll lose that too!!!

Seen Thunderstuck?

At least the "save our canyons" people are not backing snowbird expansion....maybe thats why they had matheson take this to washington to get a wilderness designation on the area.....either way this "land development" is getting out of hand.

I've delt with the Bird on this before and they are deceitful at best.

Back when they wanted to expand in to Mineral Basin they went in and simply bought up all the land. It was all private, old mining claims and such. They came to our club meeting in Utah county and sold us on the idea of having a place in the bottom of Mineral Basin where a sledder could ride up to the lift, buy a cheap ticket, ride to the top and have something to eat. They were all about "don't fight us, we like you all".

Well as you know, that was bullshiz plain and simple and as soon as they had approval they closed it off and want nothing motorized anywhere near it.

No in Mary Ellen's they have a bit of a different issue. They own the private land in there, but unlike Mineral, the majority is public. They want to put the lift/tram on their own propety, but they want that to open up all the public land to skiing, and thus locking it down to "non-paying" use.

I'm not gong to listen to their bullshiz this time... I'll fight it.
