guess third times not the charm with these donkey drives. first one wadded up a brass thrust washer and chipped a tooth on the planetary. rebuilt with new planetary and bearings on transfer gear. that one really blew up all planetary gears and the transfer gear had broken teeth. we figured although the transfer gear looked fine after the first incident that it may have been weakened and led to the destruction since it was re-used (brass shims and everything else looked mint). so third time we did new transfer gear and planetary assembly. less than 150 miles of riding i notice oil all over clutch compartment and belt shield. drain the fluid and it looks like this with chunks of gears in the mix. split the case to again find planetary and transfer gears a little toofflesss brass shims still intact.
so what is going on here? looks to me like somehow planetary and transfer gear are coming out of alignment perhaps and chipping teeth? checked trackshaft break side bearings and there is no play seems tight. flex in the cover or case?
then there is the fluid. the secondary spun it everywhere so its hard to tell where it came from. i drilled and tapped the very top of the case and added a barbed fitting and vent tube and sealed the secondary clutch bolt so its not coming from there (and i checked vent tube not blocked and there was fluid dripping out where i run it up over steering hoop). no oil under shims on input shaft or in back of secondary so it doesn't look like its that seal either. leads me think its the gasket or o-rings around reverse shift fork. and the fluid looks milky and contaminated with water (used amsoil). did some water get past output shaft seal and the contaminated fluid caused it to go boom?
this thing blows up every time it snows really putting a damper on my season
