The threads in my crank are wrecked

The threads where the bolt goes to hold the primary on are messed up bad. When pulling the clutch, i tightened the puller so much, it split the end of it, and when i took it out after the clutch popped it messed up the threads bad. i threaded the bolt in today to check if the threads were okay, when i took the bolt back out from what i tightened it in, it stripped half of the threads on the bolt.........i had to impact it out
What should o do? tap it? what is the thread pitch and size? i have no idea what do do
AND I AM WORRIED.....

run a tap through it, make sure you use a thread cutting oil on the tap...and get a new bolt. the crank end is real hard steel it should be fine go slow and easy with the tap...

if its as bad as you claim it to be it sounds like you need a new PTO-end.

you could tap it and then try a new bolt and see if it will make it to torque.

if it makes it then you lucked out.:D

i hope to frickin god that it taps okay, does anyone know the sizes and kind of tap i need?

well.......i hope to heck it works, tomorrow im goin to tap it, and ill keep you updated.....
thanks so far

if you can't tap it you can always helicoil it. will give you a set of brand new threads...

Next time you pull your primary just be gental with the pull and go slow. Try taping LIGHLTY on the end of the puller with a dead blow hammer if it is not coming off easily, the light taps should help loosen and pop the primary more easily.

When you tap it, use plenty of oil and work it in slow. Turn it in some and back it out. Sometimes you only get a quarter turn at a time. If it won't thread, helicoil would be the best bet, but it would almost require a machine shop to do it. You tap it to the next larger size, which would be either a deeper thread metric or sae. Put a class 8 bolt in to torque it. If you had to pull the clutch again you would need to drill a hole through the middle of a shorten pull bolt and put a grease zerk in and use a grease gun to pressure the clutch off.

done deal, tap worked and it took torque.

for just a note the thread is 14mm x 1.5.

now...warm the motor up to operating temp..let it cool off to room temp and then retorque bolt..they will sometimes loosen off .....

thread fix

you might look into a thread insert you can find them online. it requires boring out the hole and re tapping the threads and installing an insert in the threads. it might work i have done it to many ford spark plug holes.if you need anymore help let me know.

If it doesn't hold and you might want to look into having a machine shop weld the hole, and then re drill and tap it. It sounds like you should be good to go.

If it fails again, just use a helicoil designed to redo the original threads. all you doo is drill oversize, then tap with a special tap and thred in the helicoil. VOILA new steel threads in the exact stock size. this will NOT effect the clutch puller as posted above.

Use a Bottom Tap

If you can fine one use what is called a Bottom Tap. Use good oil and clean out often.

This will cut threads all to way to the bottom of the hole a regular tap will leave about ½ inch at the bottom that is not rethreaded.

Good Luck
