The next big innovation in snowmobiling?

Hey guys,
Smail performance already has a turbo rotory in a sled, I don't know if they have perfected it yet but it was cool. and fasttracks has messed around with it.

Snowmobiles get the hand-me-downs of other machines such as ATV, motorcycles, and cars. The toilet bowl of technology!

If motorcycle transmissions are more efficient, why can't snowmobiles use that and then have a computer shift it for us? The computer would keep the engine in the horsepower range and shift a predetermined rpms based on throttle, load, etc.

I see DI, 4 stroke, lighter weight. As for Yamaha, they only need to concentrate on LIGHTER WEIGHT!

Yes I am amazed by how much technology is in modern sportbikes & what great build quality they have compared to a snowmobile that costs about the same. Makes ya say WTF. I can run my GSX-R all day at the track as hard as possible & it doesn't care nor do I worry about something breaking. Cant say the same about any snowmobile I have owned.

was thinking about dropping a bike motor in a sled running straight chain drive to the track. get a rukluse style clutch for starting from a stop and a electric air sifter for WOT push buttom shifts. no hand on a clutch no foot on a shifter. just trying to find out what the wieght difference is between a for example apex motor and r1 motor. and the wieght of to clutches and a chain case.

I think the next big thing will be GPS systems. They are cheap and would be easy to integrate into a sled. With less than a couple lbs you can have a lot of great features. Like accurate speedos, maps, sled info, tracking systems, anti-theft systems. Maybe even integrate a real CPU into it and be able to download fuel maps online, check engine diagnostics, hell you could even set up your transfer and ski pressure with a couple buttons. The technology is already here and its cheap, why not integrate it.

diesels could be a possibility, but they tend to have a HUGE weight disadvantage.

Using exhaust valves on a 2 stroke take away from some of it's best attributes: simplicity, reliability, and weight. Adding a cam, chain, valves, springs, etc all add weight. As well as adding more wear parts to the list of things to check and replace. It does have advantages, but I think one of the bieggest improvements to be made is lower weight, adding weight to the engine makes it harder to lower the overall weight of the sled;)

I have wondered a lot about the standard transmission thing myself. I'm just getting into the sport, been riding dirtbikes and quads since I could crawl. Never seem to have any issues shifting. What would be so hard about shifting a sled? Most competant people can feel pretty well when is a good tome to shift. Road race bikes have been using push-button shifting for quite awhile, that could be integrated quite easily, eliminating the necessity for a foot shifter. Plus, they are far supeior as far a wear, durability, and power loss. Seems logical to me....

survival

Survival will be the biggest innovation for sleds in the next several years.

Regarding manufacturing new sleds. The coprorations that make sleds may not survive, regardless of the sled market. They all make lots of recreational products that will suffer greatly with the current crisis.

The new administration may just try to shut snowmobiling down due to the liberal agenda. They could do it with air quality regs alone.

Who knows how many of us will continue to have $ to ride in the next two years.
