The mostest stuckest secondary clutch ever. Need some help big time.

Folks;
Helping a friend change the jackshaft bearings on his cabin sled (old A/C ZR), and we cannot get the secondary clutch off the shaft. We spent the better part of a couple days working on it but could not get it to come off. Ended up taking it to a local shop, who apparently put it in a 20 ton press and still couldn't get it off. Have tried all the usual stuff: heat, penetrating oil, etc., but no luck. Never seen anything like this before. Anybody got any last ditch suggestions before we pitch the effing thing in the garbage and start from fresh? (And yes, the cap screw is out.)
Thanks and Merry Christmas all.

I'm assuming you have the jack shaft removed with the secondary on it? My only suggestion would be more heat and rapid cooling. Not sure what you used to heat it up, but I would bust out an oxy aceltine torch and heat the shaft right behind the clutch then put it in a press.

heat the shaft? You want the shaft cold and the clutch hot so that the clearance increases between the two, right?

Hot stuff expands, cold stuff shrinks...

Do you have an air hammer you can hit it with? Not a lot as you might screw up the clutch or shaft, but maybe the vibration will get it to come loose.

I don't know.. sounds like you tried all the normal stuff...

Your thinking is correct. But Clutches are made out of an Aluminum alloy which is very sensitive to heat and it can be warped easily if someone takes an oxy/actl torch to it. Heat is going to be transferred anyway regardless of what is heated.

You know, I do have an air hammer I can try. Will give that a shot. Also, I tried a torch, but did not try cold and heat combined. Will try and leave it outside overnight so it gets good and cold and then hit the clutch with a torch and see what happens.
Thanks guys.

Not familiar with Cat setups, but if they're a keyway design (not splined) it could be the key is stuck in the secondary keyway and riding up the end of the keyway in the jackshaft. This wedges the key extremely tight between the clutch and jackshaft. Maybe try pushing the clutch onto the shaft to see if it moves at all. If its full on stuck in either direction, I don't know what to tell you except start fresh.

Looka in the swap meet section and find replacement parts. By the time your done, you'll have more in labor than what it takes to replace.

I'm just throwing it out.

Sounds like it wasn't cared for properly. You might consider selling it on EBAY as is, and explain the jackshaft comes with it. HAHA

Buy a new one

To get it off, SOAK A LOT of PB blast on it. Submerge it if you can. Clean it up and use heat, or maybe heat before and after. After it cools down put it in the freezer. Let it go to room temp and hit it with heat again. Maybe the shrink expand cycle will break it loose.
