Tether

What are snowbikers using for tether set ups? I assume with low oil volume and the usual potential of the track tearing you apart that tethers are being used? Curious what you are using and post up a few pics.

Thanks

I use one, last year i was climbing and fell off my bike and slid down a ways. bike tipped upside down and stayed up top still running.

Raze Motorsports is strongly considering adding a tether/kill switch to our wingman kit. The ecu has the capability to plug a tether right in already. Thinking of having some sort of code also such as the ski-doo keys have with the d.e.s.s. so it helps protect against theft and is a nice safety feature for rider and engine... we will keep ya posted.

Honda

Been wanting to add one to my CRF. I'm not sure how to do it though, I know the kill button these has a little LED that blinks to tell you if there is anything wrong with the EFI system. Not sure if a guy could splice one into it?

A tether is a good thing , one good stab into the snow is all it takes . I bailed on a bad landing side ways skirting the shore line moguls and as quick as it went down it stood back up and started heading across the lake . We wear head sets and I was asking for my partner to run it down and knock it over before it gets to the trees , luckily it washed out , I think the throttle actually backed off because the track was idling before it died .

Bikes in their natural form can ghost ride for a ways , just think how far they could run with a flat contact patch and a rudder driving a straight line :)

I agree in summer probably get away with no tether. In 35 years of dirt biking never had a spot where it was needed. Doesnt mean it would not have been a good idea.

However in winter I think there is more potential of the bike getting upside down with the throttle pinned.

Really on the sled only been last 10 years or so that I have worn the tether and now it feels awkward not to have it on. If you have ever seen the pictures or video of someone getting their skin ripped off by the track you would know what I am talking about.

Ordered the cheapo one from China. I will let you know what happens with it.

Run em on all my sleds, don't have one on the bike, but am getting one.
Same as a sled, that track can tear you up.
And never thought of it til now, but upside down or on its side, running, can't be good for the oil situation. Could see running it out or dumping the oil running upside down?
IMO a tether would be easier to wear on a bike since not jumping side to side like on a sled.

And I'm not the most graceful rider. Lol. Have had to dig for the kill switch more times than I'll admit.
Also, on a bike, kill the engine and it will stop a runaway dead in its tracks. Literally. No spark, engine dies, track locks up.....perfect.

450sxf

Had one on my Beta 300rr and really liked it. Makes get-offs safer and adds some additional level of theft protection. Currently putting together a dedicated 450sxf. Anyone know if I can just hook it up the same way, going from carb to FI? I believe it just grounds to the frame when pulled.

Wiring Diagram

I was able to find a wiring diagram for my Honda and splice a tether into my kill button. It makes the actual kill button inactive but keeps the LED for service codes. Works like a charm.

Might be able to get a diagram from your dealer and splice one in?

Be sure you get the right orientation. Some brands come in "normally open" and "normally closed" circuits.

Pingel makes some nice ones. thats what i have.

highwaydirtbikes.com makes some nice pieces too to clean up your bars if you have multible switches for kill, lights, nitrous etc...

Friend has a '16 yz450fx. We just put a tether on it from OFT.
It is a Pro Armor tether done up with the proper plugs and cable length.

Advantages: works great, quality product, maintains the factory kill switch function, completely plug and play

Disadvantages: takes up more bar space than other more compact designs, expensive.

I use a pro armor on my ktm.... it's solid

We've got 2 YZ450FX's running inexpensive ($25) tether's that work perfectly. They can be wired into most any kill switch circuit, either in parallel for normally open systems (like the YZ) which allows either the stock kill button or the tether to kill the engine, or in series for normally closed systems which again allows either to kill the motor. You do need the correct tether ( normally open or normally closed) for your bike. Ten years running Yamaha turbo sleds really reinforced the need for tethers on 4-stroke engines, their lifespan when upside down can be measured in seconds even when not at wide open.
