Tether Kill switch...

Just wondering how many of you ride with a tether kill switch. I have a new pro comming don't see one in the acc. book. Dealer dosen't know about one and they were gonna call polaris to find out about it. But as usually no answer from my dealer 2 weeks now.. I've used them in the past because I use a lefty throttle and don't want a run away sled if it were ever to freeze and have the throttle stick. Also dealer didn't know if the ignition on the new sled was an open or closed system..

First thing I have done to my last two sleds is to remove the stop button, (or "get stuck button" as I call them), on the handlebars and add a tether instead.

When you get the sled you could just unplug the stop button on the handle bars and use an Ohm meter to figure out if it is a closing or breaking switch. I'm guessing that Polaris has the same system as they have had on their previous models so you shoul be able to fit the old Po accessory tether, (same as the stock ones on the ProXR 440-800 and IQ race sleds). It is a good tether and I havent had any problems with it.

that's the first thing i do with mine is remove the kill switch from the top of the handlebars, or un hook it, i either put a tether on or a sping loaded kill switch on the back of the bars out of the way, that way even if it is bumped it won't kill the engine unless it's held.

I always run a tether, it has saved me a couple times. Polaris has one that will work with the sleds. Not sure why they don't put it in there accessorie catolouge. they do have the part number in the owners manual for it.

Polaris part #'s 7556212 and 4010849 will get you the same set up as the IQR. I'm putting one on my sled when it comes in. I think it's a good idea after watching my sled idle down the hill freewheeling as fast as ever! If the sled is off it won't "coast" as easily :face-icon-small-blu

As far as the kill switch, I use a fat o-ring around it when it's in the open position. I run my throttles rolled forward which puts the switch facing down. Never had a problem since.

I'm a fan of the simplicity and durability of the Pro-Armor or SRP Pro-tether switches.

Mount it up high... very positive action and holds tight when you need it for active style boondocking! When you fall it comes out.

Get some extra lanyards/keys for WHEN you loose one.

Polaris has the old standard rubber model.... but for hard core boondocking, your body moves more than even a Professional snowcrosser and those can be prone to accidental activation more than one of these units.

MY only pet peeve with ANY of the tether switches is the clip for the jacket.... they are all cheap....

I prefer to get a small, high quality, carabiner to replace the one that comes with all the tethers
The small Petzel units are great and cheap... makes clipping/unclipping easy even with gloves on.

That was one of the big disappointments in switching from Doo to Poo - a key switch? For real? Hey Polaris... the '70's called... they want their ignition system back!!!

Have FUN!

How To

I got the Gunnar version because you can mount it at the lower bend of the bars. http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?productId=p210426
To wire it in, look for the open black plug at the harness where the steerer meets the top bracket, pack with dielectric grease. Use two standard (6.6 mm?) blade connectors and crimp onto wire ends. Plug right into the black plug as shown (red wire goes to the black/purple wire), Tape up with electrical tape... good2GO!

Have FUN!

x2 mounted between the gauges and fuel cap, wires under cowl and plugged in, hood comes off without touching it since it's in the harness that's not on the hood

Dont leave your sled with out killing the engine unless you don't care about the potential of and injury and the possibility of watching your sled ghost riding into a ravine or hitting a tree at full throttle when you fall off and your lefty is frozen up, either one will work. I almost lost my sled when the lefty froze up and when I reached for the kill I fell over the machine and rolled side ways only to have the 5.1 track whip a bunch of rasbarrys onto my right buttocks. lucky i was not to loose my machine into the ravine at full speed. Grease your cables with the appropiate lubricant and avoid the issues I went thru.

The factory rubber unit is simple.. I just dont like how stiff it gets in colder weather... nice and compact though... I've run them in the past

Just a precaution. I used a handlebar mount tether on one of my sleds a few years back. Broke the handle bars off and fell off with them in my hand. well with that happening it full throttle the sled brakes wouldn't stop it and the tether wires were ripped out so off went the sled with the turbo spooled up and full throttle over a small hill and then hit a rise in the snow that lauched it into a tree about 4 feet up. needless to say the only thing I save off of that sled was the Skis, handle bars, turbo and track.

Is there a throttle safety switch on these in conjunction with the kill switch?

Thanks
