testing Dragon exhaust sensor?

My '09 d8 flashes the check engine light 5 times indicating an exhaust temperature sensor problem. I've checked the wires and connections (even applied dielectric grease) and still get the 5 flashes. Can the sensor be tested to see if it's indeed faulty? I really hate to spend the money for a new one and not be sure this sensor is genuinly bad.

If it's possible to test this one please walk me through the steps.

Thanks:

Sorry oldxlt, I've been trying to figure out how to attach a page from the PDF manual but can't figure it out.
It's a two wire sensor so your multimeter on "OHMS" will be the ticket. Here's what's in the manual.
2.3MΩ @ 392_F (200_C) - 76Ω @1652_F (900_C)
Not quite sure how you simulate those temps tho.
Check to be sure there's some resisitance there, make sure it's not open at leasst. Anyone have any "at temp" suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. When I test the sensor leads with my ohm meter I get no change whether the sensor was cold or at operating temperature. But I was unsure if just using an ohm meter on the unplugged sensor was the proper way to test or if the sensor needed to be plugged into the wiring harness to test correctly.

I agree, sometimes you need to go to the dealer. It's just a trip to the dealer is never convenient. I just like to prevent unnecessary road trips when I can.

Sounds like you have a bad one then. Your post gave me the reminder that the simple test is to leave it in the pipe and run the sled while checking the resistance. Generally it will hit 400 degrees pretty soon after start up and stay around there at idle or so which would give your 2.3Mohm reading and should change continuously as your pipe temps increase from there.

I had a bad, and it read open on the ohm meter. If i recall it will read around 4.5-5 megohms at room temp. With the sensor in your hand, the temp change will show up as a resistance change. The sensor is pretty sensitive.

Just an update: Digital Wrench showed the sensor was indeed bad. Mine is one of four Dragons sitting in the shop waiting for back ordered exhaust sensors.

Is anyone else having these go bad and having trouble getting a new one?

sensors

Somethings up since the latest updates/flash. Since these updates I've lost two exhaust probe sensors for no friggin reason. $160 a pop is BS - no issues last year and now they're all failing - What's up Polaris???
