Tell me about Gunnison Co

I am talking with a man in Gunnison about a job possibility out there.
I see by looking on the 'net housing is fairly high, but what else should I know about the town?

From what I can tell by pictures and statistics, it seems like a great town.

Any help would be appreciated.

Great town.. I went to WSC. It was hard to leave... And ya it get's cold.. I remember 0* sunny days as t-shirt weather. :D After the -30 chill for a while.. :beer;

Riding/skiing in Crested Butte, boating/fishing on Blue Mesa Reservoir/college girls at Western State--outdoor paradise if you don't mind the cold.

I dont mind cold as long as the wind isnt blowing. And my man on the phone said the wind is pretty calm in that valley.

But what about the community?

Whats the predominant religion? Is it like Utah and a bunch of Mormans?

With the college I suppose night life can get pretty exciting.

Crime?

Local Economy?

I have never re-located before, and just want to know as much as possible going in.

But what about the community?

It's a very tight knit community - people are very passionate about living in Gunnison County. All politics and everything else in life is local.

Gunny is a pretty tolerant society - I'm not sure you'll get too far w/ that kind of attitude. Most major religions are represented here - including one with some interesting history. (www.greasespotcafe.com) If Liberal is a religion, then you've com to the right place. (Ugh!)

With the college I suppose night life can get pretty exciting.

Most people come here for the daytime activities. There are bars, restaurants, etc.. i.e. Frats/Soro stuff at the college is pretty weak due to the plethora of outdoor activities. A bit more nightlife up in Crested Butte on busy weekends.

Crime?

It's here - not big city stuff, but the typical small town stuff.
Domestics and drugs keep the local po-lice busy.

Everyone is armed, so it kind of keeps the crime down. ;-)

Local Economy?

College, Hospital, Downtown retail & restaurants, construction, outfitters, ranching. All are slow these days. Cost of living is moderate to expensive.

Best to come check it out and see if it's for you.
The cold is more tollerable than you'd think, and it's a great place to raise kids. Seems to be pretty central to lots of fun places - Telluride, Moab, Wolf Creek, Vail/Aspen/Breck, etc.. Denver is less than a 1/2 day drive away.

BTW - no big box stores. All the major retail is an hr away in Montrose. Gunny does have a mini-WalMart, City Market, Safeway, WellsFargo Bank, etc..

Check out: www.gunnisontimes.com, www.crestedbuttenews.com, www.montrosepress.com

Bonus: Some of the best snowmobiling, skiing, back-country in the state is out your back door here.

Hope this helps!

haha....smallest walmart in the US...seriously! they will even tell you themselves.

Where are you moving from? or should I say thinking about moving from?

I am living in NC South Dakota... So cold weather is no stranger to me, to make it even worse, we have strong winds across the open areas.

Gunnison would be roughly a 12 hour drive.

The cold is nothing compared to where you come from. I'm from NW Iowa, same type of weather as SD. Humid, windy cold, the kind that goes right through you. Completely different!

If I were you I'd get out here and rent for a bit. See if the job plays out before committing to purchasing a house. Right now you can buy but it will take several yrs to sell. The house across from me has been for sell now for 3yrs! finally rented it to cover the mortgage while they try to sell it.

As MtDoo said if liberalism was a religion it be the dominate one here. There is an LDS chapel only about 350 members one of which is my wife. so if that is a deal breaker so be it we will be better off without ya...:face-icon-small-win

If your looking for night life go to denver...the college BS that goes on is tolerable most nights. summer is a good time as all the kiddies are back home with their trustfairian parents off saving the world some where else for a change. only problem then are the vagrants that squat in all the best campsites until it snows again.

If you like snowmobiling we have it. If you ride a Dirt bike it's WORLD CLASS

If you like it quiet and small without the hassles of everyday city life then gunnison is the place to be

I don't notice the cold anymore sept when I forget to plug in the Dodge

Oh ya and if you like shooting and guns we have a good Sportsmans Asso.

Thanks for all the good info.

And for the record, I didn't mean to bash Mormons. I was just using the Utah Mormon % as reference. Please dont hate me for it.

I dont need a huge night life, but I like to go have a drink, play pool, shoot darts etc.

Next question.....

I cant find any on-line apartment or home rental listings.
rent.com and others say "no matches found"
Somebody must have something listed on the net..
I found online classified ads in the paper, but of course there is little info with those.

Alrevdup nailed it...

no hate intended

I believe the liquor stores out number the gas stations 2-1 and the bars out number the quor stores

If you mentioned what you do or what type of work you do I must have missed it. ?

Gunnison needs a good Cardiologist. Actually Gunnison needs a lot of things. Great place to retire as long as you have a winter home somewhere around 600 miles south.

I did 4 winters at my home in the Gunnison area and then decided life was too short. I now spend winters elsewhere and visit my home there for sledding.

The Liberals consider water-boarding to be torture. The new Messiah has outlawed it. If they truly want the Terrorists to talk they should send them to Gunnison in the winter. They would sing like birds, however, I guess that would be considered torture. :D:beer;

Seriously, Gunnison is a nice town but for me the winters are uninhabitable due to the cold and it would depend upon your line of work as to what the job opportunities are. I am an old retired bastard.

I tethered my hot air balloon for Western State's home coming football game a couple of years ago. The college rep bragged that Gunnison was COLDER than siberia for 6 days the last winter.

Yea they get a big inversion, about 1200 ft agl above town its 25 degrees warmer.

But I think the cold keeps the rif-raff away.

If you can afford to live there go for it, especially if you have never lived anyplace else, life is too short to stay put forever.
