Tampico 2014-2015 #2

Went up on Friday the 16th. Bluebird day. Best ride so far this season for me. We were the only rigs parked at White's Ridge. There is no berm anywhere but there is a sign posted there. Amazingly we saw some tracks of a side by side near Eagle's Nest. Idiots that cant read I guess. There were about 7 or 8 rigs parked at the main snopark.
About a 7 to 10 inches of new snow at the higher elevations. About 3" down low but was melting fast. About 3-1/2' total at the flag pole.

Past Clover Flats a bit there is a bowl down off the right side of the road. Some people call it hour glass. The flag pole is a 20' pole that is graduated in 6" marks so that snow level can be registered. Would be nice if we would hit the 16' mark, lol.

Looks like Tuesday will be a sunny day. Should be another foot by then too. Would be a good day to ride.

01/17/2015 2230 PM Tampico Update

-Raining hard at this time at sno-park level. 33F. Snow is slushy but holding on better than I expected. Pavement is icing up.
-Green Lake at this time is 40F, 1.5" precip in the last 24 hours, 28" snow at this time.
-Groomer ran last night was scheduled to run again tonight.
-Forecast for rain decreasing through Monday, 43F in the sno-park tomorrow, 37F on top. Up to 5" more snow on top by Monday-just rain down low. Forecast for the week is drier with highs in the upper 30s (even up high). Still far from a normal winter, especially on the temperature side.

I think we should put a shed up at the winter recreation site with wheel kits for the skis and a few cans of Clark Griswold's silicone spray for the slide rails and ice packs for engine cooling.
Then put another shed up at whites ridge or treephones to store the wheel kits, silicone and ice packs for ride back to the truck. No more worries about snow down low. :face-icon-small-con

No need for all that monkey montion, just put your boggies on. In the old days we didn't let the bare spots make us quit riding in the spring.

Heading down the North fork just below the Green lake turnoff after a day of riding the high country. April 1973.

Anybody know what the road condition is at Tampico? I was told that the berm & sign were still up at the bottom yesterday & nothing but gravel beyond. Anybody know if the berm is down yet?

Berm is still up, You wouldnt be able to drive past it anyways without chains on. The road is still sheet of melting ice until Tree Phones 100 yard gravel patches here and there. Once past tree phones its not bad. It was about 55 degrees up top yesterday so its melting pretty quickly.

It was pretty up there at least. Could see Rainier, Helens, Adams, Hood, Baker, and even Jefferson.

Berm...no berm..??

Talk about mixed info!

Snodawg says last week, no berm, drove to Whites Ridge. Now Carbon77 says the berm is still at the bottom this week?!

What could they have built a berm out of....all that gravel?

Berm is definitely still there out of the main lot. Whites ridge did not have anyone up there and like I said if you wanted to get there, you could drive through the berm as its low enough right now but its a sheet of ice after that. 5 other rigs were parked in the main lot.

THIS SUCKS.

end of report.

Tampico

*hit 61F at Green Lake yesterday. No precip in sight until this weekend, still warm up to 2 weeks out. I was out last week; have had no contact with groomer (whats to groom?). Berms will probably stay up until the road turns to gravel.

I think they put the berm up the day after I was there. But they need to knock it down. I think they need to build a much bigger snow park at White's Ridge and then plow the road. It's been a long time since I have seen enough snow down low for long lengths of time.

Tampico 02/06/2015 AM update

OK, NOW THIS SUCKS EVEN WORSE.

AM this morning. 38F at the sno-park, rained hard all night. Green Lake is showing 23-24" of snow (don't know how accurate this is)with over an inch of precipitation last night. Temp last 12+ hours has been in the upper 30'sF. Creeks are running hard; forecast is for another 2-4" of precip this weekend; snow levels will be running from 5 to 7k elevation. The forecast for the top of Darland is for maybe a foot+ of new snow by Monday night. The following 10 days is for drier but above normal temps; hence the "Ok, now this sucks even worse" view of the current situation.

I don't have any news on the berm situation. I will try to find that out today.

I would think if they knocked the berm down, chained up and at least attempt to blade the road to at least whites ridge we could make it drive able. ....don't you think?
As warm as it is I would think the ice would soften and we would chew it up.
We need to face the fact that if we can't drive to some elevation we will have no local riding.
I drove up Chinook last weekend to scope things out and everything up there is bermed with nothing to ride on the other side.
I love my sled deck! I wanna ride!
