Talk to me about diamonds

I've got a 3ct round brilliant that my wife just inhereted from her mother. Wifey already has a rock, and this thing is huge (looks like one of those candy ring suckers).
I'm having it priced out right now by a number of suppliers, but will sell it for their best offer, and will consider trades too.

Update:

We've got around to actually talking about it now, and she even put a ring on a jewelers last night...

She's decided she wants something very low-profile so it won't snag on her gloves when flying. Sooo, that pretty much counts out ANY design over 3/4 ct. with a dedicated center stone.

So today I went and had a ring made. It will be 5 .25 ct diamonds (VS1, G, XXX) in a platinum band...a copy of a Hearts on Fire 5-stone setting as seen here (but with bigger diamonds than shown in the pic):

Just realized the stones in this pic are square...hers will be round.

Soooo, her lack of care for a HUGE ring, and me being practical has saved me roughly $5000. :) HAHAHA. Going to add a small channel-set band behind it as the wedding band.

.

Sounds like a very nice ring!!! Good for you guys!

Diamonds??? value, investment??? appreciation???Do they really go up in price? you know i mean after you buy them. take the ring off your wifes finger and go get it appraised and see if you can get rid of it for that. probably not going to happen. Oh and if any one is one of the lucky 65% divorced you can hit that diamond with a hammer and make a knife sharpener with them.

whole top diamonds and the bottom rows gold - "paul wall"

mine has pretty much sat in a wood box for 12 years, cost too much and its a total game killer at the mall:light:

i was wondering about the appraisal value too. Cause i paid like $10k for my fiances engagement ring and its valued at $14k, seems like a big difference

Then try and sell the thing.. Note most of the people on here have bought diamonds for the wife.. So we aren't trying to bag on the situation, well we are, but we are in it as well.

It is interesting how this works.. the big thing is that I think most people have never sold a diamond ring before, therefore there isn't much knowledge about the actual resale value of the ring.

Anyone actually sold a diamond ring for cash? Not in store credit..
