Talk to me about Boots..

Try a Kolflach Mountaineering boot, they provide more protection, flexibility and they are made for winter sports. I broke my left ankle one season, and as soon as the cast was off I rocked a Kolflach on that one foot for the rest of the season. I looked like kook and walked funny, but felt no pain and the safety blanket factor was kick arse, not to mention my boot was neon yellow with orange inserts. Sexy.

I bet you could pick up a decent used pair at one of those play-it-again sports type stores.

Ya I'm looking into the koflach, I just wish they were a bit taller my plate is about 6" or so I need to find a pair and try them on. How'd you break it btw? I also can't seem to find them. It appears they went out of business a few years ago..

Ok, So I found another boots that I'm looking at since it seems koflachs are no longer available. It's the scarpa inverno. I spoke to scarpa, and they said they would work for want I want.. Warm, Insulated, grippy soul, won't get wet in powder, flexible, and will protect my ankle +4"-6" above w/hard plastic. The only issue is sizing, since nobody local has them..They all seem to be unsale now as well about 200-230$..

OK a quick update..

So I picked up a set of the Coldwave snowcross boots (found them online for 65 or so).. My first impression is they are a beeifer snowboard boot w/out forward lean. They look like they will hold up alot better to kicking out the rails ect, and while stiff have some decent side to side flex.. "Textured hardwearing PVC outer shell" is NOT a hard shell by any means it's doesn't seem any different then nylon or whatever standard material is used in snowboard boots, although it looks like it is less likely to fall apart as quickly as a snowboard boot, also the They "Nylon plate armor in ankle." is none exsitant from what I can tell.. there is no part of the boots that feels like a "plate" is in there when pressing on the ankle area with my thumbs. but with that said.. these seem much more promising then a snowboard boot outside of one thing.. The Straps are total garbage. I can't sufficiently tighten to the boot down, and the way it works while very easy to undo, and redo is two very cheap looking plastic straps that buckle in unfortunately I can't see the buckles lasting a season before they snap and result in the boot being useless.. but I guess time will tell..

With that said I came across a set of the scarpa invernos via my work today. These boots are EXACTLY what I was looking for hard plastic shell, very comfortable a HEAVY duty soul and being hard boots I will have 0 issues kicking off my rails. The plastic part comes up will past my ankle protecting the entire plate in my leg they tie up with regular laces so I can crank them down as tight as I want.. The only downside is 0 side to side flex, and the soul bieing like a regular boot will only make contact on the toes, and heals vs entire boot like the coldwaves (or snowboard boot) if this impedes my riding I won't know until I get out there.

I understand your concern about your leg, I also broke my leg riding last year. I think that you are over thinking it though, freak things happen. I think that all you are actually doing is changing a potential injury location. Example skiers with extremely stiff boots always break the leg at the top of the boot, which would have been a more severe break than I had with my fibula. That being said, I won't be putting my feet so far in my footwells anytime soon, as I believe that was a contributing factor in my break.

ya maybe so, but I'm more likely to re-injure myself If I'm not riding with 100% confidence and second guessing myself when I should be following threw. Also my break was do to impact (my leg getting shot up against the underside of the tunnel via the track) so in this case Armour (or a hard boot) would have taken the impact of my ankle and cracked before my leg. I also needed new boots regardless as I destroyed my burtons (souls are falling off now, and the leathers is splitting @ the seems). One of the main things I like about the scarpas being a hard plastic boot I think they will kick out my rails/footwells very easily, as my footwells were pretty much packed with ice and snow the majority of the time.

...what happend to you btw? as far as breaking further up.. I would think I would rather a clean break (if I have to break) in the middle of my bone vs in a joint.. changing the location is exactly what I want to do. I don't want to Rebreak my anlke, at the location of the plate & screws as this time it would split into a ton of small pieces instead of 1 break.

You might try a set of robs better boards....they really help with keeping the snow off the running boards. they also improve your foot traction...

My break was the fibula just above the ankle. I think that mine was caused by my foot being twisted in the footwell, but it's impossible to know for sure. The impact was so sudden and expected, one second I was carving a turn, the next, I was kneeling on the ground on the opposite side of the sled. I have no idea what I even hit.

sounds similar to my break.. here are the x's http://www.pbase.com/brahm/image/96698639.jpg did you have to get it plated as well? How'd your rehab go? I have full range of motion in my ankle but it's not the same as it was, it "clicks" now sometimes instead of a smooth motion and is alot bigger then my left ankle.. It also can't take the same abuse as before ie .. it will feel like crap for a couple days after I skate if I do any thing impact wise (ollies whatever)
