Taking Batteries on Cold RIde?

Have any of you guys put batteries in an underseat bag for your GPS? Do they go dead quick from the cold? Are lithiums ok in the cold?

Lithium-Polymer or Lithium-Ion Batteries (cell phone type or Ham Radio) do not like cold. NIMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride AA or AAA) rechargeable batteries are less affected. My GPS gets freshly charged NIMH batteries, and I always keep spare Alkaline batteries handy. My tunnel bag sits right over the heat-exchanger, so everything stays warm enough. An inside jacket pocket (next to the body) would also be a good spot.

I always keep my spare batteries in my jeans front pocket. Body heat keeps them perfectly warm. Never carry loose change in the same pocket though, it can get pretty warm.

That's what I do, no problems with this method yet.

can also back up the Energizer Lithiums. i used them in my avy becon. they last a long time. also cary extras.
Careful using those in a beacon.... their discharge curves are different than standard alkaline batteries. Could lead you to believe you've got good batteries when they're just about to go dead. Personally I don't use anything but regular Duracell/Energizer AAAs in my beacon.

I bought a handlebar bag with a heating coil that plugs into my engine. It has works awesome for my electronics. It is also a good option.

One of those hand warmer packets stuck in where ever you want to stow your batteries works great.I stick one right inside my camera case next to it and the batteries are always ready to catch the moment without fishing for the warm set.

Alkaline batteries should be kept warm, NiMH and Nicad batteries should be kept cold. In general, batteries of all type retain their charge longer when kept cold.

The issue with cold and batteries isn't the battery itself, it's the device you're using. Electronic devices generate heat to function...the colder it is, the more power is sucked from the battery. It is far more important to keep the device warm.
