SX-F or XC-W?

Sx or xc not a xcw. Why because the w is the "tamed" down trail bike with a wide ratio transmission and soft suspension, still using open bath forks. I also find the w transmissions to be gappy, granny gear first and on some models not enough juice to really pull the top gear. The xc and sx are very similar, the main reason I'd go xc over sx would be for the fuel tank but if your going to add a bigger ims or Clarke tank then that might not be with the added cost. You normally can get a sx for 1k less then the xc/xcw.

I could answer more specific questions about the bikes if you have them

A great trial bike may not be the best Mountain Horse

I think your getting the right idea!

I have 2 MH's that don't see dirt anymore.

2001 XR650R 2011 std MH S/N 00017
2006 525xc 2013 std MH S/N 00391

On the XR650R I had to go to a 14/16 on 1st ratio. 1st was to low 2nd to high
Top speed is much better.:face-icon-small-blu It made even more gappy with gearing it up.:face-icon-small-fro

525xc is stock 13/17. In comparison the CR tranny just spanks the WR as previously mentioned Wr's are a little gappy.

The XC's have that 6th gear to help out with the Top Speed on the CR's. I like to cruise at times with out having the motor at max RPM.

That Hybrid 449/511 Husqvarna tranny was the one to have. With the 1,2,3 as Close ratio and 4,5,6 Wide Ratio.

What ever you put a MH on will be a Blast:face-icon-small-win

Exactly, Well said. That was all in the decision process with the "Best all around Bike"? build thread. The SXF is a little less money and a little lighter. The IMS 3 gallon gas tank looks stock. Very nice, is a half gallon bigger than the XC, and was only a couple hundred bucks.
