summit no spark

I just got a 2002 skidoo summit. I bought it from a neighbor. He hadn't used it for three years. He had the driveshaft snap and take out the chaincase. It sat outside for at least one year. Well I have the drive shaft, chaincase, and trailing arm all replaced. I went to try to start it today and I am getting no spark at all on either cylinder. WHat would be the best compenent to start testing first. I figure it is probably some electrical component that got ruined from sitting out, but I am not familiar enough with this snowmobile yet. ANy help would be appreciated.

Also I have the exhaust pipe off and while pulling the engine over, there is oil and fuel flowing out of the manifold, since it is not getting burned. But it seems that the right cylinder has more oil and fuel flowing than the left side. Is this somehting to be concerned about or will it be fine once it is running? Again any help is appreciated. Thanks.

electric

stat at cap cheap to replace but unlikely because its both. coil, pretty reliable item rarely goes bad. mepm computer went out and did this on my 99 600 once when it was under warranty. when my stator went bad on it years later it would fire then cut out, or just nothing for several pulls then would fire and run for a couple seconds and stop. same on one of my 809s stators and mepm of course arnt cheap new.

I will check all the relays and the coil. Does anyone have a ohm spec for the coil, or is there another way to check the coil? Also does anyone have a wiring schematic for this sled? THanks.

Most likley a MPEM find another sled if you can and you'se the mpem and dess key on your sled and see if the sled runs. If you have to buy a new MPEM you will have to have a dealer program the key to the new MPEM. Alway disconect the kill switch and check that first.

e-bay cd

I had purchased a 2002 skidoo service manual cd off of e-bay when i had mine. they sell for less than $10. It has wiring schematics and troubleshooting steps on how to use a multimeter and check every relay and switch on those sleds. I found it to a must for every owner.

Well I went out and messed some more with the sled. I looked all over and couldnt find any relays?. I also tried to disconnect the kill switch but it goes straigt into a 13 pin connector. So then i took the kill switch off of the handlebar and saw that the back pops off, well i should never have popped that off cause the springs and balls went flying. So monday I will order a new kill switch. Is there any way to check the mpem?

Well I just thought I would update everyone where I am at one the no spark issue. I have checked the dess switch and cap, and the kill switch- both are operating correctly. I have bought a service manual off of ebay and thats helped some. I also swapped out the mpem and dess switch from a friend's 02 summit. That resulted in no change. I see now that when I pull the engine over I get a small DIM glow in the headlights. So I am guessing that it is either the firing coil, the stator or the pickup coil. My guess would be the pickup coil, but correct me if I am wrong. Any ideas now with this new information?

Sounds like you have eliminated All but the stator That would be next. Did you try the igniton coil from the other?

No I haven't tried the coil from the other sled. I have it narrowed down to the coil, stator or magneto. I don't know if that since the lights start to come on when pulling the engine over if that means anything or not. If it would be the magneto or stator can I remove the stator or do I need the special tools?

the only special tool you will need is a puller to remove the fly wheel.

stator.

i replaced my DESS and it wasnt bad so then i replaced the stator and it fired right up!. bring it to the dealer and ask them to test the components easiest way rather than dicking with it for months.

puller

i just use a harmonic balancer puller for flywheels. but if your lights do come on even a little that eliminates the stator. when these go bad it is because of the lamination cracking and grounding on the case or wheel or anywhere other than the pickup

Yes I have replaced the spark plugs. I tried it first with the old ones and then got two sets of new ones. They were NGK BR9ES- which is what I saw on the parts list so they should be the right ones and they were what came out of it. So since the lights start to light up, should I look towards the pick up coil, or the ignition coil?

Remember the stator has two separate windings - one for the lighting the other for ignition. Just because the headlight starts to glow when you pull the rope does not mean the ignition side is working. Have you checked the stator ignition side or the pick-up coil with a meter?
