Summit 1000?????

I'm in the market for a used sled. I see a couple used Ski-doo 1000 for sale and was wondering what the pros and cons of these sleds. I have never ridden one of these sled and know very little about them.

*I do a lot of boondocking, how are the 1000? (note: I coming from an Apex, so it's weight might not be a problem. :D )

*Reliability? Again, I came from a Yamaha, so I don't want to be towed out of the mountain.

*When looking at a used Ski-doo, what problems do I need to look for.

Thanks for you help!

05 if your willing to do some work to make sure its good, basically you do what was updated for 06 and 07

if your coming of an APEX the weight will be a non issue, and that is the main drawback on the rt1000

as for reliability, make sure it has a good battery, and run pod filters so it doesnt suck in belt dust and destroy the crank. mine ruined the bearings, so a new crank and some pod filters later, its pretty much set on that aspect, thats the only reason they even had motor issues. the low pressure fuel pump was probably updated like all of em were. some people like myself relocated em from under to motor to the exhaust side so they are easy to get to. clutch the thing and its got some BALLS, its a lot of sled, but the thing has tons of power if your willing to ride the thing, smitty drop brackets also help the handling a ton.

Im 160# in gear, and its heavy, but the power is makes up for it in anything but setup snow. If your heavy, then they are no problem.

uhh, actually, with the 07 mid alt mapping, guy on dootalk just dynoed his at 182 with nothing more than a can, the original mapping sucked, add some higher comp domes, a can and pod filters, your mid 180 range, EASY!!

Got my decked out '05 listed on ksl.com if you are interested in going as far south as SLC, UT. Twin pipes, team clutch, boss seat, RKT domes, 40lb diet. She runs well.:beer;

Thanks!

That list that Ski-doo it gave scares the crap out of me! The 180 HP number you list is pretty impressive.

Here is what I'm looking at...a 2005.5 with 2000 miles for $3800. The guy says all the updates have been done....it sounds like there was a few. :)
It looks like it's in good shape, but I just don't want to buy a time bomb.

I just want a sled to ride hard for 2 years and then buy a new sled. Am I better off just getting a 800? Is reliability an issue with the 800 also? Every other ad I see says it has a new motor.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe at sea level.

duh, when was the last time we do HP numbers at elevation?? every dyno number we compare is corrected to sea level. That is the only way to compare them all. the doo 1000 makes 30 more HP than the 800 and TONS more torque. like the torques is something you can only experience, makes the 800's feel weak. I rode a rev 827, RKT claims 172 corrected. they ran side by side, but when we swapped sleds the guy was impressed with how the power comes on.

And enviromentalist... the list may be long, but honestly, the majority of the stuff is either a update im pretty sure is free. and the ones that arent are easy to do. with a little love these things RIP. it just takes the love, and most people are way to lazy to want to do anything.

And like i said, run pod filters, and the crank will last as long as any other sled out there, they just sucked in belt dust and would lose the bottom end because there is no fuel washing the belt dust through. thats the only issue with the SDI situation, the bottom end builds up grime if the air isnt clean.

Sent you a pm.

Ive owned all the doos. Id stay away from the 1000. I had a good running one and it still wasnt half the sled my 07 800 was.

I HAVE a great running one and it IS twice the sled your 07 800 was.
He's not asking about 800's.

The 1K's are like all sleds, just need a little tuning to work.

...MAX

I had the same delema and ended up buying a 05 rt 1000, and i love it. An 800 is capable of out doing it if it has work done to it, but in stock form the 1000 moves. I dont think the weight is any issue, but i am comming of of a gen II polaris 800. I have rode other 800's and go with them regularly and my 1000 will out climb them all. ;)

Haha. I get a kick out of you guys that still own these piles. When you upgrade to a real sled you'll see the light.
