String Trimmers - Weed Whips

In need of a new trimmer after I was forced to smash my current model. I have had the $100-125 dollar models, like the Homlite and Weed Eater 2 stroke types. They only seem to last about two years before they no longer idle or run without the choke half/full on. Fresh fuel, plugs not helping.

Need something that will last 5 years, have a decent line feed mechanism and most importantly start without a full carb rebuild every 6 months.

Duty is normal grass edging and the occasional field grass and heavier.

Trying to not break the bank.

I hear your frustration, I have a weed trimmer I bought at walmart and it does the job but after running it for a few minutes my hands are numb from the horrid vibration. I can only run it like half throttle and in bursts, if I hold it wide open holy crap its hard to hang on too.

I'd look for something thats counterbalanced or something, so the engine doesn't vibrate so bad.

For the string feed this one has lines you just slip in, instead of the spool you tap on the ground to feed it. I hate those things they always mess up.

We have a local rental outlet that carries Sthil products, thinking when mine dies I'll rent a Sthil and see how it does

i have a curved shaft husqvarna that is worked hard for 8 years paid $175cdn. never missed a beat.

I bought a Cub Cadet 4 Stroke last year and it seems to work great so far. And it has the feed line instead of the bump. And I think I paid $175 for it.

Cub Cadet 4 stroke here as well. Heavier than most but is a torque monster. Wacked a field down with my neighbor. Had 4 foot high grass and mine ran circles around his $400 Echo.

Starts super EZ and fairly quiet. Balanced well and runs awesome at low RPM's for light trimming.

I have the Cub Cadet 4 stroke straight shaft. It's a fixed line but it works well. I was in the same boat as you with a POS trimmer that didn't run half the time. I've had this going on 2 years now and absolutely love it. Easy starting, runs great, not too heavy. It also take the attachments so you can put the blade edger on it too. Hope this helps.

if you take the 100 home depot one and port and polish, raise the compression adn gut the muffler run er on 114, she will really kick some sh!t, i got bored one other time when i was like 16.

dont know whats great i just adjust the carb when it runs like crap in the spring, never took a weed eater to someone else. never had a carb overhauled and never drained the fuel out of one, must jsut be lucky i guess

I have a John Deere Straight shaft weed eater that works great (on my 2nd year), my neighbor has a Husqvarna Straight shaft that is equal. About the same prices too.

Try and find yourself a deal on a Stihl. I bought a FS110 (four stroke) about 3 years ago used for $250. One of my favorite toys to use now!.

I have the stil kombi system 4mix 4 stroke. I think it is the FS130, love it

I also bought a tiller attachment, trimmer attachment, and the paddle broom for it as well since I live on a gravel road. I figure I have about 1200 into all of it, but worth it in my opinion

Better than any damn weed eater...

Ive had 1 Stihl for over 15 years now... never rebuilt, only changed the plug & air filter every-other year & added new string. Always used Stihl 2 stroke oil for mix on 87 octane. Thats it. Straight shaft Stihl is the way to go. Worth every penny IMO.

I like my Stihl. It starts easily and once you read the instructions on how to load line that's easy too. It's the cheap one and is about 4 years old.

Well I went with all intentions of buying the Cub Cadet 4-stroke. Got to the dealer and covering the wall is Stihl. He talked me out of the Cub and into a Stihl FS55R. I was leary of another 2 stroke but he guaranteed I would not have the carb issues with the Stihl.
