Steering screwed on ride today 2009 M8

Was out riding today in some pretty heavy wet snow, came to a stop turned the skies and they did not move much but the handle bars did. Lifted the hood and found the aluminum rod that connects to the steering post and then goes down to your skies bent and had a big bow in it. Has this happened to anyone?

i did the same thing early in the season. A friend of mine also had this issue and he had a machine shop make soom new ones out of solid alluminum rods.

I had a look at the 2010 and they have a thicker diameter steering arm.See if your dealer can order one in.I have bent mine twice also.

Cheers,
Dave

Talked to the dealer today and he has ordered a few but they are on back order. Might see them at the end of the month, he took a look on a HCR model and they even come with a bigger rode

Hmm...It appears the aluminum heat shields got some extensions and there is no oil reservoir level sensor anymore.

I was riding with someone who had the same thing happen. All he did was take it off, hit it on a tree a couple times, put it back on and kept riding. Im sure he had to replace it later on but it worked for the day. Good to hear ac has fixed the problem.

bent mine doing the same thing, wet snow and tried to turn. took it off and bent ity back as good as we could out in the sticks, still works but I have been carefull how hard I turn when sitting still. AC wont warrenty any steering components, but for $14 carry a spare.

what is old is new again.....

AC had this problem back in 03-04-05 with that same steering tube! The fix was a solid aluminum insert inside the existing tube, complete with machined aluminum top and bottom crank arms. It was a safety recall at the time, I wonder if Cat will handle it the same way this time?

Dave,
Where did you get the oil tank shield? Looks nice and I recently found that I need one too...

Thanks!

If you don't force it it wont happen most likely it was starting to bend from some heavy use or slapping your ski against a tree or something, My buddy did the same thing twice, after that if the skis don't turn easy when stopped I either start moving and turn or get off and turn them by hand, should have been fixed a long time ago but I'm pretty hard on stuff and have never bent one( Have felt it want to though)

it is an easy fix, My brother is a welder and he straightened it and then put a aluminum sleeve (I think it was 3/4 inch aluminum pipe) over it and left two inches on each end, then welded it , working great for two years now. Yea I could of bought another one but I wanted the problem fixed once and for all

Good thing

I had to have my cap and sensor warrantied twice this season!! Now there is a bunch of heat tape that I put on there.

Half right, there was no change to the tube
