Steering Post

Been lurking for a while and haven't posted. But now gotta ask a question.Broke the steering post on my 1997 Summit 500 and checked
with Skidoo. Part discontinued figures.Anyway looking for a new post
hopefully chromemoly, anybody know where to get one or have one
they are selling. Live in BC. Thanks

Never heard of a chromoly version. Let me guess, broke it up top, at the upper bushing? Take it to a fabrication shop, have them put a piece pf solid steel shaft in down to the bend. Then reweld it back together. It'll never bend/break again. Plus, you will be strong for any height bar riser you wish. It's an easy job for a welder, probibally $20 Last steering shaft I bought was $140CDN, before they discontinued them.

Had a friend who had bought one of my old '96 670 Summits. His steering shaft broke. He did not trust his welding skills, so he found a steering shaft on ebay, and installed it. It broke on the first ride! Come to find out, the shaft he had purchased on ebay had been broken, re-welded, and then the welds ground down and carefully painted hiding the fact.

I may have a shaft laying around. I will root around in the shop today and see if I still have one.

Obviously, the Ebay shaft wasn't welded right. Used, or new, I allways suggest that you have it strengthened. Even Doo knoew the shafts were weak as they have changed them with the advancing models. Also, it broke once, it WILL break again and then you'll have to tear sled down. best fix it now, permanently

If you are interested in getting a straight shaft to start with let me know I have 2. I had to go to a different steering shaft when I put the tripple together. $30 plus shipping. You can pm me if you want.

My friend brook his shaft last year, so when I did my mod I thought I would fix mine before it brook. I cut the shaft and added 4 inches of steel rod. I drilled holes through the shaft, and the rod. Then I put a solid steel pin in each hole. I think I have a picture I'll post. My friend did the same thing. Have not had any problems.

Just broke my steering post this past weekend as well. It broke right towards the top just underneath the top bushing.
My question is do you have to remove the engine to remove the post. I was looking and saw one of the lower bolts though still could not see the other.

It's a stock 97 summit 670

I am planning on repairing the current one as described above.

thanks!
