Staying at Winter Creek Condos just past Centennial

How's the trail/ride from there to trail T? Sounds like it's about 7 miles to the main trail. Is it smooth sailing or is it hard to get through?

Good place to stay?

I have no idea about the trail because we usually trailer up. From what I've noticed you will want to do the same because a lot of times there is no snow down that far but tons up top.

Brett and Myra are the owners I believe. We usually stay there atleast once a year and have always enjoyed it. I think you'll enjoy it. Just watch out for the pasture gates, I snagged one with the tire I believe heading up to the top and blew a tire about half way up the mountain. That was fun.

we stay at winter creek once or twice a year - great place to stay. We have only rode up the hill once. It was OK, but thin in spots. I would recommend trailering up & parking at Greenrock - waste your gas on offtrail & powder up top. At the end of each day we trailer into Centennial to fill up with gas - it's usually cheaper than Snowy Lodge fuel

We stay there as well, the trail is OK if there is snow.. However most of the time you are the one creating the trail. It drifts in pretty bad in some spots which personally i think is a blast to bust through, but it does get a little narrow in spots. It can also be a little hard to find your turn off to trail T if you don't know what your looking for. It always seems like it takes for ever to get to the mountain from there... every time we go we take the trail, although we are going out over new years and we will be unloading up at Snowy Mountain Lodge so it doesn't take as long!
Winter Creek Condos is an awesome place to stay you will love it!

I believe what you are refering to is road #318 that takes you to to T-trail. As mentioned above, it drifts over pretty good in spots, and unless you are familiar with the trail, you can easily pass the turn-off to T trail. Another option is to go up the side of the highway and turn at Barber Lake road. This takes you by the original Snowy mountain lodge, just by the ski area, and then up to the parking lot. Unless there is good snow, it probably makes better sense to trailer to the parking lot. We always stay at Winter Creek every March for the Nebraska State Ride. Great place, but I miss the hot tub:(.

If we did try this route, about how far up the Hwy is Barber Lake Rd, and would we turn left or right?

Winter Creek Condos is a great choice

I spent all of last winter at the condos and I agree with everybody else it is a great place to stay and you should enjoy it. I rode from the condos from about mid January to the end of March before the snow got to thin. 338 is the trail heading over to T trail. A tricky sidehill forms about a mile in. A few of the regulars would shovel out a flat path to make it easy. Experienced riders will enjoy it, beginners will want a different trail. The barber lake road is on the left, ride the edge of the road for 1/2 mile and then access it where the barber lake sign is (can't miss it) Two sections get wind blown and you will probably have to run asphalt for 1/2mile to a mile, didn't bother me, others might not enjoy the wear and tear. It is 6 miles from the condos to Snowy Mountain Lodge on this road. Watch for cross country skiers. Gas is in Centennial definitely cheaper at the Friendly than at on the hill at the lodge and you have more food choices in town and the condo prices are very affordable and accomodate various group sizes.

I've never ridden either of those trails but a buddy of mine who is VERY good at navigation has and he said the lower trail isn't something you want to do in bad weather, especially with wives and kids who are not experienced. Not sure who you're riding with but just wanted to relay what he told me when we were considering it a few years ago in bad weather.

Not so sure about Barber L. Road but suspect it may be a challenge as well depending upon weather and snow conditions. 5-7 miles is a long way in bad weather. GPS would be a good idea.

Yes, the 338 can have a "ticklish" side hill, and parts of it get drifty. IMO, Barber Lake road is the better choice. There is about a 1/4 mile stretch that is exposed to the wind and sun, so sometimes it is bare, but you can limp along the edge there. It's a choice of the lesser of two evils: do I try going up these questionable trails, or do I deal with the hassles of trailering, loading, unloading, etc.? As always, it all depends on Mother Nature and how much snow she gives us.
