Is it possible to remove the stator with out pulling the engine?

Yes, but it is much easier to get the recoil housing off if you remove the motor mounts on the mag side allowing you to tip the motor up a bit in an effort to access the recoil housing bolts that are difficult to reach.
It is fairly easy. Don't need to pull motor mounts. Just drill a hole as pictured below on the Axys, just big enough to get your hex socket & extension through. I used a step bit. Check the inside rail and be sure to drill between the bracing. Makes getting that bottom front recoil bolt out. The 850's and Matrix have this already done from factory.
