2005 800 Summit X - Starter Issues
tjs03 - 12-05-2011

I just posted about this same problem a few days ago. I ride an 05 800 Summit X. I still haven't been able to figure out the problem. I replaced my starter with no luck. I also disconnected power to the starter and still have the same problem so I know it is nothing with the electrical. So the only other thing I can think of is that this has to be an issue with excessive or abnormal vibrations.
Have you by chance had a problem going through belts since you noticed the problem?

I beleave it needs shimming ,same prob as we seen with some 08's.:canada:

Not had this issue on a Doo before, but my chumm had the same troubles on his Pol. Sled stop on a dime when riding b/c the starter bound it up.

He fixed it by removing it.

i do have alot of belt dust after every ride, but i aint easy on my sled at any point! i have tried to float my secondary but it dosent seam to help...

And to the post that sudgested to shim it. i have cut as many as two coils off my old spring and put them in with a new spring and no luck. i have had it just so it will bearly go out and ingauge, but it still walks out.

thanks for the posts. keep 'em coming, somebodys got to know whats going on...

Seen this issue as far back as 2001, let me know when you get the answer as to why this started to happen and why a new stiffer spring doesn't fix the issue.

ya i would think theres some kind of ribration going on. just this season i did the Perks Spin ballance "full motor bal" and its still doing it... I love my E start but it wouldnt be hard to pull it out and loose the 14lbs!

starter gear issue

Guys, I had to replace the starter motor assembly on my '06 800 PTEK on my Renegade, discovered that the assembly is too close to the ring gear all the time.. had to slot the mounting holes on the starter base to provide 1/8 " or more clearance between the starter gear and the ring gear. Brian the "doo dr" said he has seen this issue on many 'doo's.. this cleared up my issue, no more "pinging"

It seems as though its a harmonic issue causing the spring to compress extending the drive outward to contact the ring gear, youre not alone. There was a guy on dootalk who came up with a stiffer spring that cured it, I searched there and cant find the topic.

Starter

I just had the same issue with an 04 rev. Riding at night and had sparks coming from what I thought were the clutches but turned out to be the starter coming into contact with primary clutch. BOTH rear mounts were bad. Motor was laying in the bottom of the tub. Had no abnormal vibrations but I guess enough to cause the bendix to slide out.
