First off, this is not a Polaris failure...
I have the SLP pipe/can setup on my Axys. I went to start it the other day and the rope broke. It apparently melted where the can neck is going into the pipe. I'm not sure how, maybe when I pulled it stuck to the can. I can't imagine there was any slack. Anyhow, I have since pulled out what is left of the rope and spooled it back up. The recoil spring pops out very easily! A greasy mess and process you don't want to deal with. I had to remove two motor mounts to get the recoil case off!
I suggest two things. One, tie a knot in the line a few inches out of where the rope goes into the recoil case. This way if it does melt, cut or otherwise, it will sit there and can still be started. Two, make sure you have your Polaris web strap for staring the sled. It starts it very easily on the clutch, but you have to have it in your pack/bag. I had to borrow a Doo setup and while it worked I lost a piece of it and had to replace it ($20) for a buddy.
