Starter Rope Melted on SLP Can

First off, this is not a Polaris failure...

I have the SLP pipe/can setup on my Axys. I went to start it the other day and the rope broke. It apparently melted where the can neck is going into the pipe. I'm not sure how, maybe when I pulled it stuck to the can. I can't imagine there was any slack. Anyhow, I have since pulled out what is left of the rope and spooled it back up. The recoil spring pops out very easily! A greasy mess and process you don't want to deal with. I had to remove two motor mounts to get the recoil case off!

I suggest two things. One, tie a knot in the line a few inches out of where the rope goes into the recoil case. This way if it does melt, cut or otherwise, it will sit there and can still be started. Two, make sure you have your Polaris web strap for staring the sled. It starts it very easily on the clutch, but you have to have it in your pack/bag. I had to borrow a Doo setup and while it worked I lost a piece of it and had to replace it ($20) for a buddy.

I just went and checked mine. Looks like I have a lot of clearance between the can and rope, then the pipe neck and rope. I didn't see anything down below that would melt or snag it to fray the rope did you? Im glad you caught this and shared it because this could be really bad if you were out by yourself. Can you check your distances?

Mines got plenty of clearance

Maybe it's just the picture, but that doesn't look like a great deal of space. Mine is the same, I'm not sure what happened...but it did. My can springs were in place and fine. I think I'm going to put a small amount of header wrap on the neck.

I have 3" clearance from the top and bottom of the bend. I can't tell on the SLP pipe without a tape in the pic.

Start it up with the side open and watch how the rope vibrates - likely what happened to the failed rope once it got sticky enough.

If you have one of those tiny ratchets (holds 1/4 hex head bits) you can get the recoil off without undoing motor mounts.

I don't see how. I couldn't even get my hand down to where the bolt was. Taking the two Mag side motor mounts out was a piece of cake. I used a pry bar with a block of wood (to make sure it doesn't put too much pressure on the other two mounts). Quick and slick.

A lot of people will leave out the lower two allen bolts on the recoil for this exact reason... I have done it in the past on my pros... No issues
