Stage Tuning the Pro via the forum

I was just thinking after making a post on a separate thread what would be the best engine tuning upgrades per price range for the Pro. Anyhow, here are my assumptions after reading lots of different threads on this forum. What are yours?

Stage 1 - Clutching ($100-$200 range) (1-4 hp gain to the track)
Stage 2 - PA head and HPS can ($400-$600 range) (4-8 hp gain, depending on power band, weight loss with can)
Stage 3 - SLP kit (pipe, head, porting, etc) or other Porting, Pipe, Head combos by various tuners say Carls, Fastrax, RK tek, etc ($1500-$2000), (10-20hp gain)
Stage 4 - Turbo ($4000-$6000), (50-100hp gain)
Stage 4 - Carls 900 ($4000-$5000), (40-60 hp gain)
Stage 5 - Power Addiction 1100 or turbo big bore ($10k-$15k) (60-150hp gain)

I'm personally at Stage 2 currently.

between 1 and 2..I would slip in a track and either avids billet D&R case or curts(fastrax) modded stock case with 7 t drivers...track for me would be the 3" extreme.....I think all the rest of the tracks arnt cost effective over the 5.1....and I would skip the pipe/porting stage and just save for a turbo/bigbore personally...

I did the Fastrax/ Avid chaincase and drivers last year with a CE track, 5.1 was to soft for where I ride. This year I went to Fastrax for porting, PA head and PCV with their map and dynoport high volume Y and pipe (ceramic coated). I'm using the stock can because I after many years of mod sleds I am tired of the noise. I'm waiting for MTX wieghts to get everything dialed in. I thought the drop and roll would make me happy but after riding my old Tison w/Union Bay 800 the power on the Pro was leaving me wanting more. After my last ride I feel satisfied with the power. I figure with all the mods I would be a little more than 1/2 way to a good Turbo set up but the sled sounds as stock as can be but rips! My last ride I had a couple new Pro/Assult owners asking why their sled couldn't do that, I just said "I don't know".

stage 1 buy a stocker, install turbo ,ride it till it blows, part out and repeat!

you will just end up pouring money into aging sleds otherwise. Aging mod sled=P.I.T.A and poor return on mod investement when maintnance is factored in.
I should know I have a 900 rmk that has more $$ in than my trubo pro. :face-icon-small-con

last a stocker boosted to 10 psi is more sled than most of us need.

I agree, buy a new stocker, turbo kit...done deal, remove kit sell sled, put kit on new sled..repeat...lol

Yeah, I would have to agree that just a turbo and go would make more sense that doing the mod approach, problem for me is my wife has me on an allowance and I can only save so much.

i don't need a turbo for where i ride so stage 3 would work for me. prob don't even need that out here in NE.

RK Tek Drop in Piston and head kit:--->> 15HP gain $800

RK Tek 860 Kit: ??? Still testing

RKT, I keep reading about your product but I do not see any testing information or dyno results to date so please tell us why we should consider your product over the proven tried and tested fix it kit from MTNTK? How does it stack up to or compare to their product.

We all would love to know more about your product and your big bore kit but your website information is pretty generic with not much information except like available soon.

Does your kits work @ all elevations with premium pump fuel?

Sorry for hijacking your thred!

Yes, we have kits for all elevations and all octanes.

We design each and every head AFTER the order is taken and we have the info on YOUR engine and its enviroment..So, it is correct everytime for your application..

Do you have a rough ETA on when your kit will be available???

...........and how about a teaser on how it's working so far???:face-icon-small-win

We are in the testing stage.. This LOW SNOW year has really delayed GOOD testing.. So, if you have any pull with mother nature.. Please help!

But the 860 and the drop in are based on the same design.. and since the drop in is working so well.. the 860 will be just that much better due to porting alterations and the extra cc's

You have to go with what you are comfortable with..

You are asking me to compare apples to oranges..

Thanks for all the solid inputs. Stage 3 seems to be the biggest grey area as there are tons of different combinations. I would love to see the RK tek combo vs the new PA combo with CPI pipe run at Dynotech Jims. Since he is unbiased by manufactures it would be cool to see how the all stack up.

I would totally like to run a turbo or the carls 900 or maybe the RK 860 but $4-$6k is over my budget.

I also have to disagree on the theory of "buy a turbo kit run it, pull it off, install on new sled, run it, pull it off, install on next new sled"...It seems like the turbo kits keep changing/updating every season plus engines/mapping/fuel injection keeps changing from the mfgs. So it doesn't really end up working that easily. Having owned two turbo sleds before. I had to pull the turbo kits off, trade/sell the sled as stock, sell the turbo kits for 70%-80% less than I paid. This was more cost effective then trying to convert turbo kits between older and newer model sleds. So say the 2013 Pro has a different pipe, fuel injection, maybe the changed the throttles bodies, air box... I don't know but I am sure turbo kit mfg will charge about $2000 for update kits. Anyhow, turbo kits at this day in age are very model specific just like a big bore.

For me stage 2 or 3 is best because I can pull the parts off quickly, sell them easily, and trade in sled.

It always seems to me that the little things add up and up ! Like I said I have a 900 with and broken crank that puts it ove the 20k point total investment since new . Thats insane.

If budget is the problem MAKE MORE $$$$:face-icon-small-coo
