Spruce Lodge/grand Mesa

Gentleman, What is your opinion of Spruce Lodge up on Grand Mesa? I know in the past that it has had it's share of problems and not very snowmobile friendly. I am close to closing a deal with the current owners and must decide in the next 9 days to go ahead or not. Do you think there is enough support for an expansion of winter services up there that would include, warm comfortable lodging, good food, Bar, gas/oil & misc. parts, open 7 days a week consistently, large turnaround area with parking for aprox. 20 trucks and trailers, and believe it or not a friendly, compenent staff, who actually realizes that the customer is the life blood for this type of venture? I find it to be a phenominal riding area with a little bit of every type of riding imaginable. I think it has a huge amount of potential expansion for winter activities. These are risky ventures and am looking for opinions from people who are more familiar with the area than I am, will it fly or is it a bottemless pit for an influx of cash that will never make it? Any response will be entitled to a free beer!!!! That ought to get me about a million responses! Thanks for your time.

I hope it works for you. Price will be the big deciding factor. If you don't get the night stayers, you will get us all hanging out at the bar and eating dinner. Sometimes we stay at the GML, other times we bring the RV. Either way, a warm, friendly place to go hang at night will be great! Who knows what will happen with the GML when Ken sells it!

We stayed at Spruce a couple of years ago, had a great time, and good food.
I have heard from several folks that they did not have good service, warm rooms and the food left something to be desired if you could get food.
There were fourteen of us up over Presidents weekend and we had lunch, it was, good, service was good. I think that if you provide good service, clean, warm cabins at reasonable prices people will come. I know that when I have a good time staying at a lodge I pass it on to others who enjoy the same kind of recreation. I love going to the Mesa.
Good Luck:)

Grand Mesa Area Lodges

Does anybody have the latest on the lodge situation on the Mesa

Not much going on at the Spruce when we rode by there the other day. Wish Cannonman would have bought the place. We are in desperate need of a full service lodge on the west side of the Grand Mesa. Ken and Connie at the GML are great but they are missing out on a lot of customers that would stop by if they had a Restaurant and Bar.

Deal fell thru with Cannonman. Owners backed out 2 weeks before closing. Not sure if they are open or not.

Spruce Lodge On The Mesa

From what I know the Spruce is open, and it still owned by the same people. All I will say is stay away. I have had poor service and misfortune of doing bussiness with current owner. Grand Mesa Lodge has gas, snacks and nice little cabins, oh and GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. I am soory the deal fell thru.

Spruce and Alexander lake lodge

I took a look at both lodges this summer, to buy. Was really interested more in Alexander lake lodge. The grounds keeper gave us about an hour tour of Alexander.

The problem is both lodges are way overpriced. They wanted 2.2 million for Alexander and something like 1.2 for Spruce. I was expecting something like 1.2 million for Alexander.

Alexander needs about 500-900 thousand in repairs just for the lodge alone, Spruce is in better shape but not what I was looking for. I did not look at the cabins for Alexander above the lodge.

Alexander has - I think - 10 acres of deeded property with the cabins and Spruce has 8 acres not deeded (not totally sure as when I heard the price it was too much for me).

My very first snowmoble ride was on the lake there back in the 60's or early 70's, a single ski yellow snowmobile that was even slow for back then. I think everybody passed us. My uncles cabin is still there by the lake.

That whole deal up there with those two lodges is really too bad. They could be such a great thing. They will be hard pressed to sell them for that price. :(

Must concur - some good management is direly needed. My family and I stayed at the Spruce Lodge Jan 2-5 and were mostly disappointed. Cabins were ok, but overpriced; service was so-so (had to go to the lodge to get more towels as we had 4 people, but only two towels); and parking is ATROCIOUS. Great location, great sledding, should be a winner with an injection of good service and better parking.

That place should be packed with people, tearing out their wallets to spend $$. The infrastructure is there, the location is fantastic.........summer and winter is phenom...........current owner are total bumperheads. They couldn't find a gravity hole with steel boots!!!!!!

Hope this changes in my lifetime...........BUT.............in the meantime give Ken and Connie your $$ at Grand Mesa Lodge and if can make it over to Electric Mountain Lodge, the Hughes family is fantastic! Good food, spirits, and wonderful hospitality with gasoline to boot!

X2! Couldn't agree more. I wish someone like Ken and Connie or the Hughes owned SPruce or Alexander. THey are all very good people.

Electric mtn lodge is having pre x-game features next weekend put on by Colorado Sled Style.....We will be supporting the lodge ;) I love it over there!! Reminds me of the Big Horns somewhat....

Its amazing how far a smile can go in that industry. I think some people get compartmentalized and forget that every new guest needs to have a great experience to make the place survive. You can't just "get by" in the service industry. And if thats not your 24/7 mentality, find another job, its not for everyone.

I've always dreamt of owning a lodge or b'n'b someday.

I would rather invest in Alexander alone, but the same people own spruce.I have heard and experienced nothing but bad, since they shut down Alexander.Every time I go to Spruce,it's a bad environment. .The owner has a very bad raputation with the locals.Thats what's wrong with Spruce.Make a serious offer to Ken and Connie,And expand. There is alot of potential here.It is a major topic around here.My 2 cents.

Grand Mesa has so much riding that I just crave going up for our little trips. It is to the point that we pass on several weekend day trips so we can save to go to the Mesa for 3 or 4 days
Ken and Connie have been looking to sell Grand Mesa Lodge, and not for lack of business, great people, very good, customer service, nice little semi rustic cabins and good prices. IMO Grand Mesa Lodge is the one to buy and turn the little motel area into a small restaurant. I just wish I had the opportunity 10 years ago.
I hate to be negative and it is so sad that the current owner of both the Spruce and Alexander is such a crooked, money hungry, greedy individual that it she closes Alexander and is running people off at the Spruce. It will take a major effort to get a decent reputation back at either lodge.

Just to let everyone know, the deal I had on Spruce Lodge fell through within 2 weeks of closing last spring. Not on my part, but on the current owners!!!! Very frustrating deal to say the least. Both Spruce and Alexander need a ton of work and could be excellant places but will require a lot of time and energy. Ken & Connie at Grand Mesa are great to deal with and are excellant people as is Electric Mountain. I have stayed at Electric Mountain twice now and will be back there next week and in Feb. and March also. Great place to stay. It was refreshing the number of people I met at Electric Mountain last year on our first time there. Locals who were most helpful and accomadating. As for Spruce I think I will just keep a Million dollars in my pocket and come out there to ride. In the long run much cheaper!!!! I am still looking for something to buy in that area if anyone knows of anything let me know. Excellant area with a ton of potential, looking forward to being there. Thanks, Mark
