Snowmobiler killed
CALDER, Idaho -- Shoshone County officials say a 35-year-old Washington state snowmobiler has been found dead after an avalanche in north-central Idaho.
KHQ-TV reports Shane St. John of Farmington, Wash., went missing around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday about 20 miles northeast of Calder. A friend he was snowmobiling with noticed an avalanche with tracks leading into the slide, but none coming out.
The friend searched unsuccessfully for two hours before going into town for help. Rescue crews found St. John's body after 11:30 p.m.
The Shoshone County sheriff's office says avalanche conditions in the high country are extreme with 4 to 5 feet of powder snow sitting on hard packed snow.
