Spider nut torque?

Alright, 2nd ride of the season and second problem....

While up riding today 10 miles from the truck, I heard some jingling under the hood and upon inspection I discovered the Spider Nut had come completely loose and was rattling around on the shaft. We were on the way back down for the day and in a sketchy area so I rode it out and then continued to ride it 10 miles without a problem, (I seem to have good luck riding this thing out:D) but I need to know what the torque for the Spider stop Nut is.

I am assuming there is a special tool required to do the job, so I will be needing to pick up one ad get it re-torqued so I can keep riding... There's 2-1/2 feet of BEAUTIFUL snow on top and I don't want to be down or on the 800 next weekend over a loose nut:rolleyes:

Thanks guys:beer;

Other than that, the sled ran GREAT, I love this thing:D:D

Better check the spider torque too Seth, same thing happened to me last year and the spider had backed out a little as well.

Holy smokes!!!!! 235 ft lbs...

How the heck does something that tight come loose?:face-icon-small-sho

Thanks for the info.. looks like it's gonna go in to the dealer then as neither my buddy or I have any 3/4" drive wrenches. I can only imagine how much a 3/4" drive torque wrench would be.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I really appreciate it.:first::beer;:face-icon-small-coo

Hope you get it sorted Seth. :D
I'm going to be up at Section 3 the day after Thanksgiving, maybe we'll see you there.

You need the special socket and the holding fixture as well...plus a torque wrench that goes to 250...

A bit of an investment... look at Ron's thread on P-85 clutches... (username "RON")

That is a big torque figure... you will need to bolt the holding fixture to a solid bench bolted to the floor or the bumper of your truck... I know a guy that mounted it to a trailer hitch reese ball mount.

Good luck my friend.

We are gonna need to start a community tool collection soon. We can just do it like secret santa! Pick a number, buy a tool. Whoever needs the tool pays shipping.

I hope Sean gets stuck with the expensive tools, seems like hes got all the money mister three bamf sleds....

I've been through this twice and my solution has been the same both times. Use blue Locktite on the spider lock nut and torque to 250 ft/lbs. After I've done this, no more problems. You will need a holding fixture, a good torque wrench and the special tools to tighten both the spider and the lock nut. I built my own holding fixture as well as the spider tightening tool and a machinist friend of mine built the tool to tighten the lock nut for me. After re-torquing to 250 with blue locktite, I've had no more issues.

So then it sounds like this is something that the clutch needs to be pulled to do or can it be left on the sled? The dealer was unable to get the clutch off a month ago during the pre-season service so we serviced it on the machine instead.

Time to get that puppy off the crank, there's no way to hold the inner sheave to get that torque. I was in the same boat. In fact, I had trouble holding the clutch to even use the puller because the spider would just turn.
Get the clutch off, fix your problem, install a new clutch bolt, and go with indydan's recommended torque of 70 - 80ft.lbs

Great... I just put in a brand new bolt 30 miles ago... I'm sure it will be fine... getting the clutch off, now that might be interesting.

Doesn't matter how many miles, the point is... it was torqued. For the cost of the bolt it's not worth the risk... I got lucky when mine snapped, no threads were damaged and the broken stub came out pretty easy but it could easily go the other way.

clutch

I tried to get my clutch off this week would not come off put grease in the hole then the puller still would not come off let sit over night with pressure on it still nothing called indy dan he told me to get 3/4 impact on it not to hammer on it just hit it had to hit it and back it off 5 times before it popped get a big 3/4 and get it off

If the bolt has only been on there 30 miles it would probably be OK to reuse it. My clutch has been pulled at least twice and the bolt reused. I will be replacing it when I pull it this time though. As many guys as there are on here that have had them break on them it isn't worth the risk for something that costs less then $20.

I'm one of them, new bolt every time the clutch comes off for me!

I've got the 3/4" ratchet from my dad, gonna try to get it off with that sometime soon.

Not worried about the bolt even though I had one break on me last season.... hadn't even checked the torque on it as my buddy forgot his torque wrench (we were gonna check both our sleds b4 the ride) yesterday. I'm not that parnoid, lol. If it's so brittle it can't take the 96 ft lbs once, I might as well use a grade 2, 1/4" bolt to hold it on there. (I know, I sound pretty mellow for a 900 rider, lol)

Well, my buddy came over and we got the clutch off in short order.:D

The dealer couldn't get the clutch off with "a 4-ft cheater bar on the ratchet wrench and a pipe through the clutch", I put a 2-foot ratchet on it and had it off on the 4th attempt with my buddy using an aluminum tie-down bar off of my sled deck slipped over the end of his clutch holder (slp maybe?).

First attempt - grease on puller - bent the puller and spider came loose allowing inner clutch sheave to turn:face-icon-small-dis

Second attempt - grease puller again, teflon tape threads, turn sled on its side and pour water into clutch hole - teflon tape failed...

Third attempt - re-apply teflon tape, refill with water - teflon tape failed again...

Fourth attempt - apply a TON of teflon tape to puller, refill with water, clutch popped right off with what I would consider "reasonable effort".

If your dealer can't get the clutch off with an impact wrench to the max or more, try throwing some water at it, it WILL pop right off in about 5 minutes.:first:

hey dont worry about buying a 3/4" drive torque wrench!! just get a 1/2 by 3/4 adapter for about $6 !!:face-icon-small-coo

Not sure that I will have anyone to ride with on Friday, but I would be up for a ride on Saturday for sure with at least 1 if not both of my buds.
