speedo problem

i have been having problem with the little square drive keys for the speedo breaking on my 2004 switchback 700 144, i replaced one and it last about twenty miles, went to replace it again and could not get it out, so i to the whole jackshaft out replaced the bearing, but part of the key was still stuck in there so i just trimmed the new key down, that one only last about a 100 miles, does anyone no what could be causeing this.

Speedo

I always heard that if your speedometer quit, watch out for the bearing on that end of the jackshaft.

You replaced that so the only other logical reason would be the speedometer cable binding and whipping inside the housing?

I doubt the speedometer would have enough drag compared to the cable.

Check the speedometer cable routing to make sure it doesn't have a real tight bend in it somewhere. Also make sure the cable is lubed within the outer sheath and not full of rust.

Pull the cable out and drain the water, clean with your preferred cleaner. The inner cable itself can come out from the speedo side, don't lose the washer, put some grease in housing and reinstall. Moisture causes speedo keys to break. And if old broken one cannot come out just tap it in the driveshaft, hollowed out inside. Or pull small round pin from shaft. . .

He's talking about the key between the housing and shaft not the cable itself two different things.

Yes I know and a problem in the main speedometer cable will cause that drive key to twist and break off. I have had it happen more than once on different sleds. I would say for sure that the speedometer cable is binding or not rotating freely which is taking out the drive key.
