South Big Horns Conditions

Grooming won't start till after the new year. Good snow now but trails are rough. I met one of the new owners of Meadowlark and he assured us they would take care of the snowmobilers. Looking forward to dooing buisiness with them. Yes the gate is still closed on the West end of the lake. Real dangerous. Forest service needs to get off their butt's. They ran all the good groomers off so they could save a buck by doing it themselves. They need to STEP UP and do the job.

DON'T RIDE THE SOUTH HORNS !

I went riding yesterday with the wife to try out her new sled. We went to the southern horns and it was a JOKE.. Between the forest service leaving gates closed across trails that will get someone killed, no grooming, and Meadowlark and Deerhaven being a total wreck. It was the worst I have ever seen on the south end of the horns.

I met one of the new owners of all 3 lodges up there. Ummm not impressed at all. The owners are from California, and know nothing about snowmobiling. They are skiers.. And he made the mistake of telling us about his lawsuit money he got and needed to spend on something.. Doesn't seem very interseted in the lodges and making them better. man I hope they do though, I guess it couldn't get any worse then it was or is !

As for the snow the trails sucks because the state won't get off their *** and groom, or mark trails, but yet charge us 10 bucks more per sled..I will not be buying a tag next year. I'll just make sure I don't stop for those forest service ranger tree huggers that don't have any power anyway. No base yet but a good start to one.. I won't be riding the southern horns anymore that is for sure! Hope nobody hits those 2 gates that are closed across heavily used trails and gets hurts. Stupid Forest Service I hate them tree huggers!

So if you are coming from out of state to ride the horns GO TO THE NORTH END !! South side is a joke !

Bolt cutters

Hey wyoac I've got a pair of bolt cutters that will take care of the lock on the gate.. So Some poor s.o.b. dont lose there head because of the dumba$$ forest service!!!! Prob cant get under it now with the new snow?!? Just fit on Monday with the low winshield LOL Before the new snow on monday night!!

I was able to fit under them, but like you had a low windshield.

Those gates won't be around next year.. Nothing like riding a 4 wheeler around in the summer with a cutting torch in the back box.. Forest service will have some welding to do...

It is not the forest services responsibility as the state of WY has taken over grooming operations from the private contractors. The state is responsible for opening gates, trail grooming, signage and marking trails. Again, it makes you wonder why the government must get involved when private enterprise did such a good job in the past....just a sign of the times I guess....:(

You are right the state is in charge of grooming. We all need to the call the number on the bottom of our registration paper to complain. We all did and left messages. I'll keep calling after every time I go until it gets better.

However you are wrong about the gates. They are forest service gates and the forest service is in charge of opening them up. Not the state.. I know because I stopped and talked to the forest service office on friday afternoon about the gates. They didn't seem to care to much, and tried to pass the buck on a guy that was out of the office. Imagine that!!

Everyone needs to call the forest service in Buffalo and complain to them, hopefully no one will get hurt waiting for them tree hugers to get off their *** and open the gates!

I haven't talked to Forest Service yet to see why in the world that gate is closed, or WyDot to see why the trails aren't being groomed. I will get back to you guys on this.

Sigh...it's crazy around here! So much needs done!

I did four years ago, under McCotter. When I heard that it was changing owners I came up to see about a job. I, like many of you, want so badly for this place to be all that it can. So, here I am, putting out fires, trying to hire people, trying to find towels and get people fed and in general trying my best to make their experience the best that I can, considering it just changed owners and we are scrambling to open the other resorts. Sigh....

OK, here is the scoop. The guy that is supposed to open that gate is at 307-684-7806, his name is Rick. According to the lady that is taking his calls he knew about the gate before he left on break, which he will be gone on until this Wednesday, but neglected to open it for you all.

Sorry about your experience here. I hope that as the weeks go by things will continue to improve around here. Don't give up. It may become what Dean once had up here again. I will say that it has been snowing for the last 24 hours up here, so the base is awesome. WyDot still needs to groom the trails and trail maps are supposed to be sent by Forest Service, but those guys are behind the ball!
