sonora pass grooming

looks like rorke is going to groom again this year. he has a newer tractor and is getting ready to roll. you folks that ride there need to call or write the summit ranger district and support him. a long term contract means better equipment and more stability for the program. i only rode there once last year and it was great. l lived and rode there when there was no groming then bad grooming. its come a long way. rorke also has a auto repair and snowmobile shop. jim

last i talked to him it was not on paper yet, but looked good. i was down to see him a couple of weeks ago and forgot to ask him for an update. been trying to get hin to sign up on this board, but he hasn't.
i live 35 miles n. of klamath falls or. and 60 mi. from diamond lake. 4200 ft. been snowing all day. riding wedneday. jim

I spoke with him on Sunday and he is still waiting for a contract in writting. There is alot of drama on the hill over this issue. I will be calling the Summit Ranger Station today and ask them to get off the pot and release the contract.

Whats the number for the station, I want to put this up on westcoast sledders, Im sure we could get a few more calls.

Well I called the Summit Ranger Station in Pinecrest today only to get the run around. The gal that answer phone said it was her first day. I was transfered down to Sonora only to have the phone disconnect. I can't remember who she was trying to transfer me too. I then started looking for other phone numbers on the FS webpage. I saw a central number in Clovis (559) 297-0706. After some more run around I was tranfered to Patrick (sorry I didn't get his last name). He said that the grooming contract for 108 had expired (last years contract), and that he had no new request from the Summit Ranger Station to put out a new bid package for 2009-2010. He said that the request needs to come from the Pinecrest District Ranger Station, and that I should contact Karen Coldwell at (209) 965-3434 she admins the grooming program for hwy 108. Don't try calling tomorrow because it's a holiday for the feds, but I ask all hwy 108 riders to call on Thursday and ask for Karen Coldwell and tell her to send a grooming request to Clovis ASAP.

Another thing to keep in mind is even once the bid is released bidders will have 30 days to respond, add another 30 days or so for the FS to award and you are looking at an easy 2 months before any grooming could start :(

I called the Summit Ranger station this morning was told that Karen was down at the Sonora Ranger station until this afternoon. If Karen isn't in when you call ask for Julie Martin. The phone is (209) 965-3434.

Ok - Called the Summit Ranger station yesterday. Still getting the run around. Spoke with Dave Mentoya (not sure on last name spelling), he said that they were still waiting for the State to send up a request to go out for 2009-2010 grooming bid after which they (Summit Ranger Station) would send a request to Patrick in Clovis to send out the bid package. So we are still in the same boat not knowing if or when a grooming bid package will be issued. I encourage everyone who enjoys riding the west side of hwy 108 and Sonora Pass to call the following officals, and tell them to stop the delays and get the grooming package out for bid.

Karen Coldwell or Julie Martin at the Summit Ranger station in Pincecrest at 209- 965-3434.
Sue Warren at the Sonora District Ranger station at (209) 532-3671.

Also make sure you try and call Terry Harper at the California Sno-Parks at 916-445-9982. I understand he manages the grooming programs for the state once they are awarded.

I sure hope they're right. Weather man hasn't been right all year. Truckee was supposed to get snow today and not one little flake fell from the sky.

Its clear skies and 19 degrees right now up in Truckee.

The upcoming storm only looks like it might bring 8 to 18 inches. But I'd take it. It’s enough to ride trails and old logging roads. I feel like a 10 year old three days before Christmas morning and can't sleep at night due to anticipation.

I hope your friend gets the contract. Was watching the news Wednesday night where Cal-Trans were not going to fire up the snow plows until the snow started falling. They are hurting for money. And this may be the reason why they are slow to write any checks right now.

Well out of everyone I called at FS, Terry Harper from Cal Sno-Parks was the only one to return my call. He left me a nice voice msg. to report that the grooming contract is back up at Forest Service for approval and signatures. He said not to worry that hwy 108 will be groomed this year. The funds should be available for release in about 6 weeks. He went on to say that there is a good chance (conditions pending) that grooming will start by the week of Christmas and New Years.:)

Sounds like Rourke might be the one.Good news no more Chuck and his once a month grooming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I got the feeling that FS didn't go out for quote. Let's keep our skis crossed that Rourke got it again. He really did a great job last year. His schedule of grooming (3) days a week work great!
