Son #2 enlisting in the Army, need real advice

well, there used to be grass just behind a curb there at the end of the entrance.....Its alittle tight when your 75' long going right, got to the end of that and took a left, then bumped a ramp.....they hooked up and pulled the engines right off
must have been early 2010......right before i sold my truck and got ready to deploy

guess the wife has a cousin that that moved over there too

Right on! I totally understand that! Hope her cousin like it here. I sure do! LOL

Thanks again everyone for the continued input, I havent made any decision yet still trying to sort through everything and find what will be the best fit for me. with our current economical situation and lack of a job market it has flooded the recruiting stations with new recruits. this combined with Obama getting a second term and creating more budget cuts the military is creating a situation where there is not a great demand. Once again thank you though for all of your comments it has given me many new routs and doors to check out, I will keep everyone posted with what i decide to do.

Thank you

One thing to remember is that the military is a govt run institution. You will go through problems and frustrations because of it. Also, just because it is the military doesn't mean there won't be d-bags around you. No one says it, but it is true. FYI, my dad served and didn't want me to go in, and my wife served and said she would divorce me if I went in (later stage of life than fathers advice).

In the military you are working in a system. A system that can break you from it's inability to do anything fast nor give a crap about you.

Sorry, but it is important to point out some negatives of the situation.

Godspeed to you and your decision!!

Good families produce great servants to our country, regardless of your decision, you are a true patriot!!!

Thats right... Its up to you and you only! Thats a great thing about America. You can (For the most part) Stay or go! LOL

True but that is also due to Sh*!ty supervises!!! I have been lucky (for the most part) and had good ones. Yes there are always D-Bags no matter where you go or what you do. You cant change that.

Lets not forget... It isnt for everyone! Even I dont like the political part of it. I knew that going in. I still (after 14+ years) dont care for that end of it. I'm not a game player. Hey, each to there own!

I have always felt the Air Force was the better of them all. Thats just my opinion though.

look it up....not meant to ruffle feathers.....but i would think twice about sending my son off....

Why the Army ?

If your goal is intelligence ... get into a program where intelligence is most important and rewarded $$$$$ ! $15K sign up bonus and up to $150,000 to re-up. NEC 3396

SEAL

My third choice would be Air Force ... Combat Controllers (CCT) (AFSC 1C2X1)

If you had good grades I would look at remote piloting (UAV)... this is the future

I have a friend whose son is enlisted in the US ARMY and pilots attack helicopters. He seems to be doing well. Police flyin helicopters ... and they get paid pretty well especially since all the Vietnam guys are leaving.

Anyway ... why the ARMY?

Sigh......

your opinion is duly noted. Those of us serving will continue to do so without regard to your feelings on the subject, because sometimes one has a passion in life and is able to overlook the negatives associated with it.

Son #2 is graduated with a degree in criminal justice, 23 years old and very close to enlisting in the Army. He has only gathered info from recruiters which seems to be all over the place depending on which one he talks to. They all seem to promise the moon, but I am skeptical that he will really serve as a Jetski Sniper in Maui. Lol.

Any Snowester's still active or know someone that he could get a second opinion from on the info he is being told. Thanks in advance. EW

Take him by the hand and take him to see the Air Force recruiter......I am Navy to the core but those blue boys have it easy........:yo:

what do u mean exactly by " overlook the negatives associated with it"?

Question,

When the time comes, what will u do when asked to assist in surrendering the sovereignty of this country(u.s.) over to the united nations?

You will either have to stand with the free people of this planet or you stand with the n.w.o.

there is no middle ground....this will be a very confusing time, u know it's coming....what u gonna do?

Since he is in the military he can't comment.

Maybe he means he will protect our freedom even though some think him as little more than a pawn and others declare he is not appreciated.

Really? Have you read the oath of a US military officer? Do you know what I have SWORN to do? Don't question my integrity or what I stand for. I've read the constitution, I know what I'm defending...better than most I'd say.

And as far as the negatives: the possibility of dying while doing what I signed up to do...whether I agree with it or not. It is not for me to decide where I fight. Follow legal orders, do my job to the best of my ability, and control the things that I can.

I am a recruiter for the Idaho National Guard. Been here doin it for almost 12 years.
I work quite closely with an ROTC program and deal with guys in your situation quite often.
If you are looking at going into Law Enforcement go for the Intel Job.
MPs are not always looked at desirably by civilian law enforcement due to differences in state law code and the UCMJ ( uniform code of military justice)
MPs can do things that civilian police officers cannot. Also very few MPs get to be more than glorified security guards, guarding posts in the middle of nothing.

When you do go to MEPS you are not committed to anything until you take the Oath of Enlistment. If they try to change MOSs or pressure you that you have to sign, WALK!!!!!!!

Generally I get upset when people start to describe Recruiters as sleazy used car sales types. Unfortunately I have seen and had to deal with some that have legitimately earned that reputation.
If you would like to talk I'll be available tomorrow morning and pretty much any time Tuesday or Wednesday. 208-390-3674

Also let me ask you this why did you decide Army? Have you spoken to all of then branches on what they can offer you and what your options are?
Also don't get discouraged or antsy that you have to take whatever is available right now.
Our requirements and rules change all the time, and I mean ALL the time.
I've seen guys that can't enlist one week get in the next and couldn't again the next.
Call me and I can tell you what you need to look for on your contracts and specific things you need to ask about.
Also maybe what you need to keep your mouth shut about. When you go through MEPS there is such a thing as being too honest.

I think what some are trying to do is give advice FOR THE LONG TERM.

Your brain will outlast your brawn and look at areas of the military maximizing your brain power.

IMHO focus on how well you are gonna be trained and what conflicts exist between the military and comparible civilian occupation.

Go for the brainy job and you will have more opportunity.

Thank you for your service.

Can you publish here the oath taken by an officer and enlisted?

Are they the same?

Is this oath only "followed" while at work?

When can you change this oath for ... to make things work easier?

Enlistment Oath

I (state your name) do solemnly swear I will support and defend the Constitution against all enemies against all enemies foreign and domestic. That I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same. That I will obey the orders of the Office of the President of the United States (and the Governor of the state of 'resident state {National Guard Only}) and the officers appointed over me. So help me God.

Officer Commissioning Oath

I (state your name) do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office which I am about to enter; so help me God.

Officers also require a Federal Recognition Warrant before they can fully carry out their duties as they are commissioned agents of the United States.

Turbolover got them both correct. Officer's do not swear an oath to obey the orders of the President. Just that we will defend the constitution. We also receive our warrant, as well as a new warrant when promoted.

I don't understand the "only followed at work" question. ?? It's not a 9-5 M-F job.
