Soapstone Snowcheck Ride - 10/06

Spent the day 4 wheeling up at soapstone today - wanted to check snow levels (and see what that area looks like without snow).

Pics:
- 1383 is a hillclimb slope we call "tripple"
- 1384 is the road from tripple to "vader" (others call it Bear canyon I think)
- 1390 is that open mine hole someone fell into last season. I think the branches help, but someone should drop a big metal grate over that deep throat

also tried to find the road people think exists to get out of Iron Mine Creek - there is a road on the north side of the canyon, but heads up to the ridge top pretty quick (I still need to download my GPS tracks from today). not sure this road would help anyone get out from the place they needed rope to lower their machines down to the bottom of that steep canyon.

Can't remember the name of the lake at the top. But there is a route out of the North side through the Aspens. Meets up with an ATV road. Most likely easier on a sled than a wheeler.

After the rescue I went on, I sat and stared at it for a long time knowing damn well we could have made it out that way. Almost tried it on Super Bowl Day but didn't have a clue where we were at then.

S&R said they get called to rescue in there every year. Hector and I will drop in there this year and get out via alternate route.:D Guaranteed

BTW: pic 1414 looks familiar. Even without snow.

I think you might be referring to Iron Mine Lake? If so, we picked our way through the trees last winter from that lake over to the soapstone side - that was fun. Pic 1414 is a different route we found today by ATV the other way (from soapstone side to iron mtn lake). I'll upload GPS tracks later...too tired right now.

I am not sure if I want to say this or not, but here it goes. I'd like to go with you.

Here are our GPS tracks. The red lines are the ATV route we took yesterday, the yellow ones are from a sled ride last March. The section of red trail between the blue hash marks is where I took pic 1414.

Here is your map that now shows where we were and where we had to exit. Your yellow and red lines aren't far from the sleds at all. Point and shoot up the hill and we're out via Iron Mine lake. Pretty thick with Quakes but doable in my opinion.:face-icon-small-hap

so are people getting in trouble by dropping down from the north side of that creek (coming from the iron mtn lake area) or dropping down from the south side (coming from the cave/open mine area)??

They dropped in from the South. I think no matter how you enter you're screwed. The river bottom gets too blown in with bottomless powder therefore forcing a side hill out. With so many contour changes it constantly makes you drop to the bottom and then you're done. Pack down a platform and start over again.

Here's Google version:
