So why is it?

In my opinion
It's probably the hardest thing in the world to make a performance product that is well suited for every consumer of every skill level, height and weight and strength, when it's to be used in (let's face it) the most demanding environment
Cold, wet all the time, Huuuge bump's, get's bag run almost every time it's used and often undermaintained
Has an incalculable combination of minor to major modifications and states of tune/set up's
Is assembled and sold by hundred's/thousand's of individual's who have their own ideas and expectations, skill level's and training (or not)
All of this while people are taking the sport to a whole new level as the machines improve in performance
The above is the perfect description of Chaos in action
It's actually real hard to make something this complex meet everyone's expectation's
To be honest, i think it defies logic good modern snowmobiles work considering what they go through
All the manufacturer's deserve a pat on the back for their work, after all, most of us could not even create a functioning bicycle let alone put a sled together from scratch that would be satisfying
Cheer's:)

I think you're giving them way too much credit to be honest. Think of how few problems your vehicle has, and it gets run everyday of every year also in all conditions possible with 10X's the systems and moving parts at work in it. Then think of how much maintenence per mile your truck recieves vs. sleds....basically nothing. They are designed for a purpose....you look on the websites and they say "deep snow performance" as the model, and show a picture of some guy jumping it, shredding powder, or carving a big sidehill. You don't need 800cc's and 163" tracks to ride on a groomed trail around your field and they know that. So yes, it is an extreme envirnoment, but the machine is (apparently) designed specifically for that environment, with no other real purpose or intended use. And, in the end, it is priced accordingly, as we all know that a performance mountain sled is priced well north of a Bearcat or whatever.

Everyone has made some good points!!

Unfortunately, it's ALWAYS about the almighty DOLLAR. Always someone above you saying how little money you can spend on your R&D and it's always too much. Too many of these people (white collar executives who've never been on a sled) feel that warranty is ACCEPTABLE! "It's part of doing business." They've never been in the back country, letalone spent 2 days on sled retrieval missions. They don't have to cover towing or heli-vacs so who cares.

And if the tester is honest and says "we've got some issues here,we better adress them before this sled goes to the market," they'll just fire the guy and find someone who'll tell them what they want to hear. So, along with money, job security plays a huge role in piles being sold to the public.

Don't wanna rock the boat!!

Funny that the 05-06 900 was brought up because the 05-07 doo 1000 and the 07 800R were the same untested turds. It took us 2 years and alot of $$ and R&D to make them run like they should've in the first place.

I remember 1985..Formula Plus 521 going thru a belt every ride/day that season. No matter how many things change, some stay the same!

^ My 07 Doo runs well too but I wouldn't call it a reliable well-sorted out machine in factory form.
