So what's gonna happen when 800R's blow out of warranty??

Although some (including myself) are having good luck with them (knock on wood), it is blatantly obvious there is a known problem with the crank. There are simply too many cases both on here, and in real-life to sweep it under the rug or brush it off as operator error.

So the grand question is, what are your thoughts on owning an 800R sled after the engine warranty is up? What do you think Doo will, uhh, doo when it barfs a crank? Not sure about the rest of you, but if it means shelling out of pocket for a new shortblock; a damn expensive one with an indefinite lifespan at that....not sure I can fathom that.

For every new motor installed under warranty by your dealer you get another year of warranty on that motor. So blow one a year and you'll be golden till you decide to upgrade. Just a thought?

got 1095 miles on the x--900 since new motor with no problems--600 on new 377 belt and motor alignment and belt looks like the day i installed it--trying some different clutch stuff for the heck of it but the sled has been awesome--no complaints here--selling the 06 x and grandson is getting the 08 x and i get a 09 x:D:):beer;

Oww I was unaware of that....good to hear, but hoping your motor blows up inside a year is still kinda the sh1ts!

T/A....my sled has been awesome so far, and am at 500 miles on 1 belt. It rips and pulls more track speed than any other 8 hundy in our group, and most of the stock 1000 AC's. That doesn't change the fact that there's an obvious problem with 800R cranks that people will be dealing with, in one form or another, once the warranty expires. I'm just curious where everyone thinks the money will come from.

I can fathom that!
I blew the crank on my XLT, 700RMK, 800 escape, and 900rmk. But I keep sledin! I got 1700miles on the 07 XRS(wifes now), with no probs.
I'm going to try to keep ridding new though chopper rides don't get warrenty.

Just put Polaris stickers on it, Poo riders have been dealing with this since 2000, much higher failure rate than any Doo.

Does anyone have a list of all the recalls/warranty problems for the Xp?Dealers here say no warranty for driveshafts but i've heard in the Us they will weld and others claim BRp is allowing 1.5 hrs for the dealer to weld them up?Reeb is there a difference in warranty/recall between the Us and Canada?Seems like some are getting welded and others aren't!

4 800R's in our group and ZERO motor issues. 2 have almost 2k miles, mine has 1200, and the other has over 1k as well.

Been riding it like I stole it from day 1!

Original belt on mine and 1 that has 2K.

I have not received any bulletins or heard from my DSM about allowing any time to weld driveshafts under warranty. They will however warranty any that break. I've only done one, but they had no problems doing it. I dunno but I haven't heard anything otherwise. Maybe they got something before we do there?

Dealers got the ok from BRP for about 24 hours to weld the driveshafts. 1 dealer, I'm not sure where he's from, but he did one wrong, and it broke on a guy. The guy is suing Skidoo, so they put a stop on the welding driveshafts for now. Our dealer only did 5 of them, before he was told to stop. Glad mine was one of them. What they told me was that 1 of the spot welding machines wasn't hot enough when they were going through the line, and didn't make good welds. There still claiming a small % of them are failing. I'd still get it done if you can, just for the peace of mind if nothing else.

My dealer wouldn't weld mine. went into the other dealer to pick up the new sprocket and chain and he said unload the sled and he would have it welded by tommorow. he takes them out and gets them done. seen him carry in a hole box of shafts. not sure whu some dealers are doing it and some are not.

When is the warranty up on the '07 engines? Does it depend on the purchase date? Mine has over 1000 mostly trouble free miles but I went through the crank episode on a polaris last year and am not in a hurry to do it again.

Are you sure about this? I do have experience working in a dealership, and it was as a service manager. I will not say which dealership, and I have been out of that line of work for two years now, but when I was there, any part replaced under warranty was only covered on warranty for as long as the original warranty remained. Only time parts were covered from one year was when you paid for the part and it was installed at a dealership.

I am really interested to know because I own a 2007 800r, original engine, around 1200 miles.

They extended the warranty didnt they? So if we had 2 year engine warranty alread........are we warrantied for 3 years??

"F" the coat.....LOL

No! and don't even bother trying to get the coat:confused:

Deaner.....you can have my coat! It's still new with tags and has never left the bag it came in! ;)

The guys who took the 2nd year engine warranty instead of the other swag got screwed...just gotta cross your fingers and hope the pin stays in the grenade!

There was a post ..maybe even on the old forum...about the main cause for the cranks going down. Whats new in 08, pto bearing smaller by 10 microns to allow for movement, sythentic oil recommended, and a thermostat. I will see if I can dig up that old post.

Basically the case in 07 in deep snow has too much cooling allowing the pto bearing to expand/contract thus eventually causing them to seize. Areas with deep snow conditions (revelstoke) had high failure rate while other areas with low snow amounts where seeing very few failures.

Nuts and bolts of thread basically mentions: a) check run out of crank B) if crank is still ok drop in a thermostat C) run mineral oil.

I have said it before and will say it again.....if you want the sled to run and want your motor to last talk to Turbo Al. I would be surprised if any dealer sees as many motors as this shop and live/ride in the real world not ride groomed trails.

Some peeps may be riding deeps snow conditions and still have there sleds running but that doesnt mean that their crank run out is progressively getting worse leading to crank failure.

Does doo know about this was problem H#LL yes ! Why do you think they made the changes in 08? Why dont they recall it you ask? Cheaper for them to cross fingers and hope that not to many blow.

Even with these preventative measures motor will still need to be torn down 3kish to run through the basics.

later

Looks like old forum is down so can link old post.

Warranty

The 2 year warranty is of the serial number on the sled not the motor itself or any other part of the drive train. When the Sleds serial number surpasses 2 years its warranty is up. In our group 2 of our sleds are on there 3rd motors, don't care though we have a good dealer that will have them fixed by the next ride. The sleds rip up until the crank bearings seize or explode. Just put my third motor in so should be good for one more season or maybe half. You can buy a 4 year warranty on the sleds for $800 if your worried though.

"Whats new in 08, pto bearing smaller by 10 microns to allow for movement"

That sound like a pretty insignificant amount. 10 microns is only .01 MM or .00039". You could change the bearing that amount by dropping it in your coffee.

Does not take alot of clearance to have a working setup vs a dud. Also with the addition of the thermostat this is supposed to keep case temperatures more consistent thus less "stress" on the bearing.

07 vs 08 motors are essentially the same except for those 2 changes. Compare the number of motor replacements on the 08 vs. the 07 last feb.

I guess doo just got lucky, or...........

Just trying to relay the information I have collected. I am hoping these changes will save my sled. I know for sure that if I just recieved a new motor that I would be making these mods since the warranty is about to expire. I would be annoyed if I where to keep getting new motors that are basically all set up the same and destined to fail. Not only the down time but the lack of confidence in the sled. I have yet to hear any dealer pay for chopper ride out 400$+ , sled rentals 250+$/per day while you wait for you sled to be fixed (or the remaining riding days of your sled trip) or new belts for you buds that have to keep towing you.

Thermostat install with milling was approx 70$. Pretty cheap insurance imo.

Also if you are tired of the sleds clutching and want better overall performance out of the 800r Al is the man and many on here will vouch for him.

Cheers
