So, what engine would you use?

Look into the aprilia 850 mana
75hp 850 v twin
CVT
EFI
electric start.

Make a dedicated bike out of it and strip absolutely everything off, could get it around 420#, heavy but I don't thingk you can really get much under 400 with EFI and a decent motor

I think youd want more hp at that weight. Im 441 with 120 hp and feel like I need another 30hp... Supercharge the bike :face-icon-small-coo

Looking at the gp type 250's. Very peaky power but definitely has the power to weight ratio we want. Somewhere around 1.25 hp/lb. with transmission. Makes me wonder about the old streetbike twins like RD350 etc. they didn't have much from factory but built up maybe?

Also wondering about built banshee motors. Apparently they are around 35hp stock but can be built to over 140hp and big bore kits up to 610cc.

Electric start, 500cc 2 stroke single w/ a balancer, or twin (inline - think big bore banshee motor) w/ single pipe. 500cc single based on the new 300cc KTM/Husky motor. Should be able to get reliable 80hp out of it. No CVT. 6 speed manual dirt bike tranny - 6th should be a transfer section/road gear. should weigh the same as a 450 4 stroke. 2 strokes are so much quieter, I think we need to go that way for the good of the sport. I'd also like to see an exhaust that points down - tough to do, but it's a wish. A Polaris type - semi-direct injection system should work perfect. Light and effective and reasonably priced. DI costs too much, and its too big, with weight too high up. I'd like to see this machine keep the dirt bike feel/narrowness/look. that's what makes this evolution of the sport so fun. Keeps me feeling like I'm on a dirt bike even when the dirt is covered with snow!!

panthera

The yet to be released panthera hybrid (for trx400) will be counterbalanced, pricey but powerful & light. That mated with a lectron would be sweet.

2007 or newer 4 stroke phazer 500... basically 2 yzf250 engines mated to together to make a twin 500.
1) relatively light weight and compact for power output
2) reliability
3) efi
4) electric start
5) cvt
6) mpi turbo kits (140hp) for those that need more than 80 horse.

That's my thoughts if I was to build a purpose built snowbike

I would build a 583cc CR500 liger. Light weight and very powerful.
Have a 650cc banshee based quad, they can be built much larger than the previous comment of 611cc. You could go in the 800cc range with a banshee motor as a twin. Triples in the 1300 range.
