Snowy's conditions

Do you all realize that the reason all the Snotel sites are saying -99.9 is because all of the measuring instruments are buried!!! Man can't wait to get down there..

Yeah I was wondering what that was all about lol I figured they were just busted.

Probably true. 2 weeks ago never saw such deep snow.

Also two seasons ago the man that keeps the sensors running told me if they show negative that can also mean that it is snowing. The sensors use sonar (if I got it right) that bounces off the snow surface but if it is snowing then you get signals from the flakes which throw the readings off (hence the minus numbers).

Not while I have been riding down here. We dropped in to seven Sunday afternoon, the trail going in from the Lake Marie side was sketchy at best. We were on the normal path going in and riding through the canopy of the trees. Got in there and there were no tracks and a lot of snow.
Took us another hour to get back out!
Find it amazing that the creek in the bottom still shows little sign of opening up.

Was out 2 weeks ago and in 20 years of riding the snowies have never seen such deep snow. We rode north of 130.

Sand Lake cabins were all but gone, buried in snow. There was one cabin by the trees which had a few feet of roof showing but the others were pretty much buried.

The Glacier hillclimb area had a very large cornice on the north side and also had another cornice further south. Couldn't see any rocks anywhere. Never have I seen 2 cornices there and rocks are normally visible in the middle at the bottom.

The snow is deeper now that it was then!

I can't recall a year (since 2000) when you see this!
Lake Marie Outhouse Sunday April 17th!
Yep, there's 317 inches in keystone, cant really trust the snotels because they get drifted or snow blowen away around them due to being in open areas. Tis is a record year for snow everywhere in the snowy range though. People will be riding til july 4th if this keeps up, for sure there end of June anyway. Epic!

Friday 4/21 major wind but great snow. Saturday 4/22 absolute blue bird day with great snow. Can't beleive how much snow is up there yet.

So how far up the road is mud in Albany??

Till you hit Snow?

After the first switchback?

We rode two weekends ago and there was snow almost all the way down to the old railroad grade - then mud to the parking lot. They have had snow and sun since then - but my guess is that it will be mud to the first switchback.

Per Ted last Saturday afternoon (ran in to him in Centennial), parking lot is a mud pit but the snow starts right around the corner from the lodge.

Not sure what the temps have been this week so could be different now.
