snowy range road closures

Are the signs posted in the areas where the pine beetle has killed a bunch of the trees. If so, they might be gearing up to log some of the those areas off. Of course, pretty hard to get the wood out if the roads got a 50 ft berm at the end of it.

From hanging in the Snowy Range all summer, I can see that it's only a matter of time before all the trees go up in smoke and flames...Maybe the berms are being put in to create some type of firestop? I don't have a clue why, just a guess. If we have a warm/dry winter, next summer will be the last summer we see any trees or forest in the Snowy Range, and then they will have to try and keep us off the land because of the burnt timber everywhere. It's really hard to enjoy something that is dead, as much of the forest here is.......It's gonna burn, it's just a matter of when, and how it's gonna start(lightning, human, etc) because to save what is there they would have to cut everything down, and they won't do that! I'm just surprised there hasn't been some nutcase running around the forest yelling "Save the Bark Beetle" yet, 'cause everything else seems to need saving... Go ahead and make a remark about an eminent fire to a park ranger, I can guarantee it will be the end of your conversation, because they know the truth also, it's gonna burn, we just got real lucky this year due to the Man above giving us the moisture we have received. All we can do is pray for 450 inches of snow and -20 temps from Dec. to March, then dodge the fallen trees as we cruise through the forest. Just my .03 cents worth.........

p.s. IF you have property in the Snowy Mountain Range, please visit your insurance agent and make sure you are paid in full!!

Fellas you are all several years behind the curve on this one. I'm guessing that nobody on this thread took the time to comment during the forest plan revision process when the USFS lined out all of these closures. The final Snowy Range Travel Management Decision has been out since June 2007, maps and all.

In short, roughly 1/3 of all of the roads in the Snowies are being closed. they sign them first & then come back thru with heavy equipment and bulldoze them in with berms and trees.

These areas are all still open to sleds, and the backcountry riding is not affected. However, the families that sled the southern Snowies are sure going to see a huge difference in the trails that are available to them.

A bright spot is that for the first time ever singletrack dirt bike trails have made it on the map.

It really seems to me that ATV's were the primary target of these closures, if you are an ATV guy you have taken it in the shorts big time.

It is ironic that they are out there tearing things up with heavy equipment in the middle of the forest that they let die in the first place, all in the name of keeping the evil public out.

Trails?? They have snowmobile trails in the Snowies??? Thought those were only in MN.

Guess I've never had the desire to look for one to ride on... lol :p

Randy,
Thank you for emailing.

I am aware of those closures. With a few key exceptions, all of the closures are legal. Several BRC members in WY are working with the Ranger Sandoval to re-open the few exceptions. Some folks are putting together a proposal to re-open some of the closures.

The decision on these roads was made many months ago. BRC did what we could, but our membership in WY is low.

You asked if I had any ideas on what to do next. My first idea is for you to join OHV clubs and organizations that work to keep roads and trails open. You can join BRC at https://www.sharetrails.org/secure/join_or_contribute/

The second idea is to put a specific road/trail proposal on paper. It doesn't have to be fancy or complicated. A map with which roads and trails you want open will do. Send that to Ranger Sandovol and to BRC. We will see what can be done to re-open the routes.

Thanks again for emailing. Please email or call if you have any questions.

Isnt BRC a national organization ? and Isnt this a National Forest??

Low membership numbers in Wyoming should have zero influence on your support. What a lame excuse-

A wheeled motorized statewide association in Wyoming does not exsist=MRCOW is a joke-

BRC - I will keep my money in my pockeT and help those who really do support Wyoming Forest's such as the state snowmobile association
