We receive hundreds of questions from snowmobilers about which beacon is best, which probe is best, which shovel is best, etc.
As you may be aware, there are many avalanche equipment manufacturers who do not support snowmobilers, so we wanted to create a package of TOP OF THE LINE equipment from a manufacturer who supports snowmobilers.
If I had to choose a beacon, shovel, and probe that meets the purpose of being prepared for an avalanche AND does not support the greenie manufacturers who despise snowmobilers, here is the package I would choose.
BCA Tracker DTS Avalanche Beacon - This beacon is a two-antennae digital Beacon. Very easy to use. Very hard to break. Relatively inexpensive compared to other models.
(I also highly recommend the Pieps DSP) But for the sake of picking one, I picked the BCA tracker because it is made in Colorado as opposed to Austria.
BCA Arsenal Shovel with the Extension Handle and Companion Blade - The reason I recommend this shovel is because the companion blade is big enough to move snow with in the case of an avalanche. You don't want to be digging with a tiny blade and not be able to move the snow fast enough.
The shaft of the shovel is oval shaped, which makes it stronger than a normal round shaped shaft. The extension on the shovel makes it easier on your back if you are digging a lot of snow. And maybe the best feature of all, it has a saw built into the handle of the shovel. The saw will cut through wood extremely fast and is designed very well. It is always good to be prepared and having a saw with you all the time is another way to be prepared.
BCA Profile 240cm Quickie Probe - This probe is very very quick to assemble. It has depth markings on the probe so you can see how deep the person is buried. 240cm is the minimum length I would recommend for a probe. The diameter of the probe is also thick enough that it won't be breaking on you. There are other great probes out there (some maybe even better) but they are made by companies that don't support snowmobilers.
PM me with any questions you have about the product. I'd be happy to give you my opinion on any of the products we carry (or don't carry for a reason).
