Snowmobile rental

Hey guys,

Im a flatlander coming from Wisconsin, we are considering a trip to togwotee wy this December and wanted some opinions on snowmobile rental. Currently if we rent from togwotee lodge they require that you be 21 to operate one of their 800s, so for me being 20, 6' 275 would a 600 rmk 155 be able to survive? I have lots of riding experience just not as much in deep deep snow. Also if anyone has any other recommendations for places to go feel free to chime in. Thanks in advance.

Honestly the 600 Pro's are really impressive, I feel like it would be just fine for you, since you are coming from Wisconsin and haven't really rode much in the mountains, the sled wont hold you back to where you can go I can promise you that.

I might suggest a guide too, a guide can help you learn how to ride better and take you to some amazing places that you couldn't find on your own.

Togwotee is an amazing riding area!

Hope this helps,

Ryan

If you are 6 ft and 275 pounds, a 600 would not be much fun in my opinion. I have ridden both 600 and 800 on the same day and there is a substantial difference in power between the two. Trail riding - no big deal, but deeper snow and climbing - BIG difference. But, if that is all you are able to rent due to your age, a 600 is WAY better than nothing =)

Big Horns

A good place to start out mountain riding would be at Bear Lodge in the Big Horn mountains. You can find all sorts of terrain there, and I know from experience that you can rent any size sled as long as you are 18. A few years ago I rented a sled because I totaled my sled in the first hour of the trip :face-icon-small-ton. Rented a 600 and it did fine, but I'm only 6' 180lbs. Also, Bear Lodge offers insurance on the rental for not a whole lot of cash. Would definitely recommend this, I know the rentals in Cooke don't offer it.

Sleds at Togwotee altitude will make noticeably less power that they do at your elevation too. Years ago I worked at a dealer in West Yellowstone, we got accused regularly that we had "detuned" our sleds. These accusations always came from people who were accustomed to riding at lower elevations. Something to consider when settling for he 600.

That's an understatement. After riding at around 1,000 ft for 15yrs on 700-800cc sleds and then unloading at 10,000ft the first time I thought my 700 triple had been replaced with a 440! No throttle response and run it wide open all the time.

You will quickly understand why there are so many turbo sleds in the mountains.

Have fun. Eric

Long before 800cc sleds were available every inch of Togwotee was explored on 440, 500 & 600 sleds. Short Tracks.

I remember those days snow was deeper back than to or it seemed like it was.

Togwotee on a 6

Sounds like you are making the right choice, based on what I know. One thing to keep in mind however, elevation is going to effect you more than it does your sled. Tips are as follows: hydrate hydrate & hydrate again! Avoid achohol (20) eat foods that help you rather than slow you down. Start working on your cardio yesterday. It's going to probably be a bit more taxing than you think, so keep a positive mental attitude, when self asks self wtf were you thinking?! You can set self strait.
Ps. It's addictive like brake fluid, you just can't stop...

You'll be fine on a 600, especially for a first trip out. It's more about technique. I snowmobiled Togwotee throughout the 80s with a John Deere Liquifire 440. Took that thing to the top of Mount Austin all the time. Even had the brakes go out once when I got to the top. Had to ride all the way back to the lodge with no brakes:face-icon-small-sho Oh, the good ol' days...

I always use the rule "Its better to have more power and not need to use it then not having the power and needing it" but having more power then your skill level can be dangerous in the mountains. You will have fun on either of them i am sure.
when you rent the 600 ask the rental shop if there is a possibility of trading up to the 800 if you find out that you need to. Of course that will depend on how close the rental shop is to where you will be riding for sure. but that might be an option.

I'm 6' and 260, and when you can ride a 600 WFO all the time, move up. The intent here is to become a better rider and an 800 will only allow you to cheat. A 600 will make you better. All the info stated is true and a 600 will do most that an 800 will. Give it a try and see what it feels like. We stay at the Line Shack (Union Pass) every Super Bowl weekend and they are reasonable and fair. They will probably work with you if needed.

Larse 24........lets do this a different way. We at Togwotee like you to have the most amount of fun you can. Although we have an age limit, it comes down to the guide and you on that decision. We won't put you or the lodge in trouble so if you are acting in a responsible manner, the guide can put you on an 800. Go out and have a blast and ride with a brain, you are in. Go out and ride stupid, you are back on your 600. I have put 15 and 16 yearolds on 600's and they did great. The decision on you on an 800 is all about you. So, when you get there, look me up, and I can talk with you and your guide and get you on an 800.
