Snowmobile motor on go kart

Has anyone put a snowmobile motor on a go kart if so how hard is it to do. I was thinking i should take my polaris 700 and build a bad *** kart for the little bro.

Some of the boyz I raced against had them in their mini-sprints
809 doo triples

Hard on the bottom ends and heat was an issue

Foz chassis and also Saldana could build you a radiator.... you'll need it

If your sled does not have a battery, you better figure how to get the stator to put out enough watts to run a DC fan on the radiator, or keep up with the draw on the fan from the charging system

Check if your voltage regulator is regulating DC volts going out, and take care for which wires you tap into for power for the fan, could be too heavy of a draw and burn the stator, CDI or ecm

If you do a little digging, I believe WesTech used to make a converter that you could tap into your stator wires that would convert AC voltage to DC and had a strong enough of a diode built in to take the load of the fan kicking in.

Remember, A fan is not like the constant draw of grip warmers. WHen it kicks in, you can multiply the watts needed to run the fan times three. That is the load which will be backfeeding into your stator.
Best bet as I mentioned earlier would be if the sled has a battery so you could run the fan off the battery. The battery would act as a coushion for the power surge and save the stator. Then it is just a matter of if the stator can replentish the draw from the battery the fan is taking.

I guess that would be my biggest concern

It can be done though

waste of time

by the time you put the engine and all the DRIVE componets onto a modified kart it would be useless. if you want something more practical find an old cr,yz kx 125 or 250 engine and mount it on it. one of the shifter karts i play with has a cr 125 engine and it is PLENTY fast. not as fast as the other two with vortec engines. but CR125 engines are a dime a dozen. im sure someone would trade you for a good runnin 700 pol. engine.

You definately don't need or even want a 700 on a kart.
When I was in high school, a buddy and I fabbed up a kart from scratch, 'bout 6' long and darn near 6' wide, about 3" off the ground. Tried running a Kawi 440 liquid with a Chevette radiator and it never really worked, although we didn't have a fan. Overheated instantly.
Ended up with a 400 (I think) free air out of an old Cat and that thing hauld @ss!!!!
Used the whole drive system from a sled, primary, 2ndary, jackshaft ran to a chain drive to the rear axle.......ANd a pony keg for a gas tank! Had 2 motorcycle disk brakes on the rear axle.
It would tear a set of tires off in 1 good burnout/donut and would run 75-80mph top end. Used to pull out on the county highway and pass cars like they were standing still.
Some of the most fun I've ever had with my pants on!:D

A 700 in a go cart would be freakin awsome if you could get it to work, and not overheat! I encourage you to start a project:D

Find a donor bike for the radiator, fan and relays.

And oh yeah... give it a decent suspention...

do you have a website or something with more information about these shifter karts? i've wanted to do this for years and just never pursued it.

thanks.

This is more of a dune buggy than a go cart, well its actually a Honda Odyssey with a custom roll cage on top. My brother and I transplanted a 340 Polaris twin into it. It was alot of fun, but I wish it would have had suspension in the rear.

thats sweet me and my bro have always wanted to do it.:D did you burn up a lot of wheels with that one wheel wonder?

ROFL... been there done that. I put a 440 SnoJet engine in a odyssey back in 89. The thing was scary fast with the lack of suspension. Thing would roast the tires anytime you wanted.

I'm currently building a similar machine using a 440 XCR engine. I bought used front end parts off ebay from a Yamaha Warrior (a-arms, spindles, calibers etc), bought a used Trans from a Polaris ATV so I got reverse and whatnot. Bought a steering wheel off a 350 odyssey because it has thumb throttle an dual brakes on the wheel so I can use both feet to hold myself in. Its about 60% done. Everything from the rollbar behind the driver and forward is almost completely done. I still have to create the trailing arms and spindles for the rear before I can finish up the engine mounts / squirrel cage.

Its an ugly machine... and the cage is definitely overkill in terms of strength... but its a fun hobby. Anybody out there with a hobby lathe want to help me make a couple rear bearing carriers for my trailing arms? :)

I'm shooting for something similar to this but on a budget when I'm done:

this is exactly what i plan building i have a old honda Odyssey and a burned up arctic cat 600 twin. plan on putting them togeather someday.

My buddy stuck a 700 twin poo engine in a 4x4 polaris quad,,,, guess who gets to use it while he's away working for the next couple years:)

Beleive it was a somewhat easy transplant b/c of the all polaris parts. He had to custom fab the twins for it which I think he said was the hardest part.

When I was in collage I did a 700 wildcat motor in a go-kart/dune buggy. It was a fun prroject and went fast till the belt got wet. The fun part wasfitting twin pipes in there. I now have it with a GSXR 1000 motor and it haul the mail and is way faster. If I were you depend on the size of the the kart I would do a kart motor they have better charging system much simpler to install and they go really well.

I'll try and find some pics of it. I have had about 6 motor all together. It started life with a Briggs 8hp then it went to a v-twin briggs 16 then to a 550 honda then the 700 wildcat and now the 1000. I think it needs a turbo next.
