Snowbike advice. CRF450X

Need some help guys,
I am getting a MH this spring and I am riding a 06 CRF450X. For Jetting, what is suggested, both out west and in the flat lands, also am I going to have to be playing with the air screws alot? Just trying to figure out what I am getting into for next winter so I can prepare. Goal is a Fuel Injection Bike but that will be a year or two out.

Any advice, suggestion would be great.

Live in Michigan, ride here and our west.

Thanks in advance guys.

hi ellis
you wont have to adj.any air screws as the fcr caeb has a fixed air bleed. There is however a fuel screw which is tough to get too just due to location on the bottom of the carb.i rec. getting a aftermarket fuel screw which is easily adj.,i bought one from scotts the same people who make the steering stabilizers.

As far as jetting i would look at the owners manuel.I have a 07 crf r and my manuel has a jetting chart in it i can only assume that x manuel would have it also. Or you could get a JD jet kit.
Also do a search on some of the fuel dilution problems some of the efi bikes are having.A properly jetted carb is just as good if not better than efi, minus the possible icing depending on how cold it is.
good luck

Why not get an APT Smartcarb? Better then fuel injection and save a bundle of cash.

r u running the smart carb now? if so how is it,r the cast versions out yet or did u throw down for the original, how could you save money by spending 400.00 plus on a new carb? just askin:face-icon-small-hap

after rereading your post berg i see where you are coming from,my bad.hope you are healing well.

Actually I'm healing damn slow!! Must be my age. Haven't run a smart carb but have been reading mtn-doo"s thread. I like the idea of a fuel system that works from sea level to 14000ft+ (several riders used the Smartcarb at Pikes Peak Race). They all loved it. I think APT has the cast version available now. And I think a couple of hundred $ is a lot cheaper than a new fuelie bike. If the 570 didn't run so well, I'd be looking at a SmartCarb for sure!

I was just on apt site the cast version dosnt appear to be out yet but at the price of 370.00 that seems like a competitive price. If those guys who r racing pikes peak have good results ,would be a no brainer.Sorry to hear about the healing.

Thanks. As soon as I saw my foot turning 360 degrees I knew this winters riding was a bust(pun intended!):D:lol:

I have broken my rt collar bone twice now,c6 in my neck ,yes that was scary but i love riding bikes.I have quit countless times but i now accept the risk.at 48 on my way to 49 in may im getting older but its sooooo!!! fun:face-icon-small-ton

carb vs getting injected

after riding the same old flat sliding keihin on a long succession of 4 strokes I have found that on the 450's when jetted correctly, they are not real finicky to elevation. If you're not sure how to jet, buy a jd jetting kit, when installed you'll find that 4-10000 elevation running issues on a 450 isn't a big deal. Having a stock 450 with factory lean jetting creates the biggest rider/tuning headache in cold weather. Any of the motocross bikes need more help than the enduro models. Hitting triples on short straight is lean mid range stock jetting that comes in most motocross models, jd jetting will send you better richer jettting for snow riding.

tons of good posts on "thumpertalk" on putting in correct leak jets/oring connecting excellerator pump for throttle response bigger pilots to have bottom end and jetting for extended running power and safely for motocross models that you want to have extended full power top end.
