Snow tires

Nokians.... dang good tires... good life good traction... I got them on my Jeep. Only thing they have let me down with is on black ice.... and I wouldn't really call that a let down... more like reality for non-studded tires.

i was going to get some for my truck but 900 bucks for a set. my dudictable is 200 bucks so if i hit the ditch or snow banks its cheaper to pay for the dudictable then the tires.

Good logic as long as you hit the ditch, not some lady with a baby carriage ;)

I run studded Nokians and they have been unbelievable - but that is on the work truck and I can get them in a ten ply.

I have used many different types of winter tires:
Canadian Tire (goodyear knockoffs I think) with studs that were okay
Yokohama (A633's) I think, which were excellent (no longer made)
Michelin Arctic Alpin better for ice than snow
Bridgestone Blizzaks (WS-50's) are undoubtedly the BEST winter tire I have put on a vehicle to date. Awesome traction, grip, road holding on crappy roads. Downside to them is they become all season tires at about 50% tread. I have used mine for 3 seasons with most of the tread left. You will not be disappointed with Blizzaks!

Haven't used Nokians yet but have a friend who uses them and what I've noticed is that they are good but I'll bet my Blizzaks stick better!

You can also read tire reviews by those who use them at The Tire Rack.com to get more information on tires you wish to buy. www.tirerack.com

I have an 08 CRV, the lil' bugger has 17 in. wheels, the only tire I could find that was not just a passenger car tire was a four ply Yokahama, that has a semi agressive tread pattern. I just ordered them last week so I have not tried them yet.

Also voting for the Blizzaks. By far the best snow/ice tire I have ever used. Downside is that they HAVE to come off as soon as the snow is gone. Bare pavement eats 'em up faster than you can believe.

My dad's a mechanic at a tire shop. We put Winterforce tires on both his ranger and my blazer over the winter. They're fairly cheap and they have a long wear life. I've got almost 40,000 miles on mine in the last year, so I'll be getting another set in a week or so. My dad's are studded and it looks like he'll be able to get another few seasons out of them. They turn my blazer into a tank in the snow, so if you're looking for a good buy, these are the way to go.

Here are the results from Consumer Reports testing (this is just the highlight):

Best for severe winter performance:
Michelin X-Ice
Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice
Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50
Mastercraft Glacier Grip II

The Michelin X-Ice is the top choice for harsh winters. The Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice and Mastercraft Glacier Grip II also provide excellent snow traction, though not as good braking on ice. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 is also very capable on both snow and ice.
